SONAE MC’s Amad Hafez presented an update of experiences with cascade systems in Portugal and the retailer’s plan until 2020. While the company plans to continue the use of CO₂ subcritical systems, it is seeking an alternative to R134a and still evaluating the performance of its two CO₂/NH₃ stores.

Amad Hafez started at SONAE MC in 2012, in the department of equipment and construction, taking responsibility for the management of the cooling projects for both new stores and re-builds. He has been applying and constantly looking for new solutions in the area of commercial refrigeration by making the stores more sustainable both energetically and environmentally.

He is a graduate in Electrotechnical engineering from the Institute of Engineering of Lisbon, Portugal (ISEL), and holds a master's degree in Mechanical engineering with specialty in power, HVAC and refrigeration. Previously, Amad worked at Arneg Portugal where he was responsible for the department of technical assistance and projects.
