We're happy to announce the second round of case studies selected to be presented at ATMO Europe 2018 conference from Arneg, Carrier Profroid, Danfoss, Efficient Energy, Reftronix and TEKO.

The ATMOsphere Review Panel is pleased to announce the third round of case study selections for ATMOsphere Europe 2018 taking place on 19-21 November in Lago di Garda, Italy.

Arneg, Carrier Profroid, Danfoss, Efficient Energy, Reftronix and TEKO will present their innovative natural refrigerant-based technology case studies at the conference.

The presentations are:

Arneg | NH3/CO2 cascade system for an Italian warehouse by Lorenzo Del Rio, Federico Santi, Enrico Zambotto

The object of this effort is the consumption analysis of a distribution center located in the province of Viterbo, Italy. The evidences demonstrate the convenience in the using of a NH3/CO2 system in warehouse applications.

Within this modern logistic park for fresh products managing fruit, vegetables, salami, cheese, fresh fish and even frozen, the refrigerated covered walkable area is about 18,500 thousand square meters.

Its refrigeration system is based on a modern NH3 / CO2 cascade cooling system, in which CO2 is used as a fluid pumped into the various devices at normal and at low temperature.

The ammonia is compressed by screw compressors and then condensed in the evaporative condensers.

In the roof is installed a photovoltaic system that reduce the total electrical consumption.

The paper shows the energy consumption analysis compared with other similar systems.

Carrier Profroid | Case study of a convenience store equipped with advanced CO2 condensing unit by Nicholas Pondicq-Cassou

Presentation of the customer benefits using CO2 advanced condensing unit to equip a small retail store.

Details of energy efficiency benefits vs former HFC, as well as noise level and serviceability benefits vs 1st generation of CO2 condensing units.

Presentation of multiple field trials done with multiple retailers: Tesco Express in UK, Norma store in Germany, Franprix store in France.

This new range of condensing units adresses the challenges of the Convenient Store market segment in terms of both first cost and acessibility to tiny machine rooms or outdoor installation spots. Splittable concept will be presented to overcome the challenges on a real installation case.

Danfoss | System efficiency with parallel compression - gas and liquid ejectors - and where to apply which CO2 technology

CO2 refrigeration is developing rapidly. This presentation will cover (1) case story on the latest in CO2 technology, and (2) take a broader look at where to apply which CO2 technology.

(1) The case study presents field data from a supermarket installation consisting of parallel compressors and ejectors supporting flooded operation. The purpose is to evaluate the level of energy savings that can be the obtained running the system flooded.

(2) The scope of the second part is not only to understand the level of energy savings on an annual basis for different CO2 type systems in various locations, but also to investigate financial aspects like payback times for ejector solutions in various systems and sizes and for different climates.

Efficient Energy | Zero CO2 emission, solar driven cooling of buildings with a chiller using water (R718) as the refrigerant by Jürgen Süss

The presentation is about a solar driven centrifugal chiller using water as the refrigerant cools an office building located close to Stuttgart in Germany.

The office space to be cooled is located directly under the flat roof of the administration build-ing. In addition, the it has five exterior surfaces. Therefore, during sunshine, the offices heat up significantly. Before the installation of the chiller, there was only the option of window venti-lation.

In the course of the F-gas regulation no standardized solution should be installed. As a natu-ral and safe refrigerant, water (R718) was the favored refrigerant for an indoor installation.

The flat roof situation with sufficient space made own power generation via a PV system pos-sible. As a result, the roof got not only shaded, but supplies the electricity for the chilled water generation. To compensate for fluctuations in the solar power supply, an electrical storage of 28 kWh is installed in addition so that it is dimensioned for a complete daily routine during summer.

Thanks to the combination of electric storage and thermal storage of the cold water hydronic system in conjunction with the part-load-efficient centrifugal compressor of the eChiller, cool-ing can be covered by the daily cycle, including pre-cooling and post-cooling of the building structure. At favorable outdoor temperatures, a partial or complete Free Cooling operates dur-ing night time, which significantly extends the capacity of the electrical storage.

This completely CO2-neutral installation ensures comfort cooling without temperature or cur-rent peaks. Solar power generation with in-house storage also prevents infeed into the public grid during periods of intense sunshine and thus overload due to other solar power plants.

Reftronix | An example on how to bring down total cost of a CO2 condensing unit by Henrik Christensen

The component and control solutions available for the condensing unit manufacturers are limited and switching from HFC's to CO2 can be a challenge. This presentation introduces a CO2 condensing unit solution utilizing latest technologies and optimized component selection. Performance data from real installations, total cost analysis, and how to get started will be presented and discussed

TEKO | Germany's largest supermarket with CO2  refrigeration technology and heat reclaim by Andreas Meier

After 1,5 year of planning and 12 months of renovation work, EDEKA Zurheide Feine Kost opens its doors at the CROWN in downtown Düsseldorf on the 22th of March.

On an area of 12,000 square meters, spread over two floors, Germany's largest and most spectacular supermarket offers more than 60,000 items. In addition to common products such as coffee, tea or drugstore articles, the market offers one thing above all: FINE COST.

The case study will give an impression on the most special challenge combined by CO2-technology in such huge market with extremly high value of goods: the safety concept. Besides the commercial refrigeration the CO2-unit is responsable for the air conditioning and heating of the market. We´ll explain how the project is realized including the electronic controll technology of Wurm Systeme.
