Natural refrigerants took centre stage at the recent ATMOsphere Bangkok conference . The conference entitled “Natural Refrigerant Solutions – Policy drivers and examples of Natural Refrigerants being used around the world” saw HC industry presenters from around the world coming together to share case studies on the topic of HC technologies.

Aimed at climate negotiators on the lookout for alternatives to chemical refrigerants that are technologically possible as well as safe and efficient, the conference operated on the premise that detrimental HFC-based refrigerants have to be phased out in the coming years- the sooner, the better. Indeed to this end Australia’s Brent Hoare of the Green Cooling Association gave a presentation that focused on the Australian carbon equivalent levy on HFC that was introduced on 1 July 2012. This increased cost on HFCs will make the concept of retrofitting refrigerant solutions such as the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants in small commercial refrigeration and split system air-conditioning all the more attractive.
