Last week, CTA refrigeration engineer Nick Doherty was asked to speak in a panel at the annual ATMOsphere conference in Chicago, IL. ATMOsphere, which deals with the use and implementation of natural refrigerants, has established itself as the most influential forum for discussions on the business case for natural refrigerants in North America. It offers participants a program full of end-user and supplier panels, policy, market trends, and technology case studies.

As a participant in an end-user panel, Doherty spoke about a CTA project on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, for the Defense Commissary Agency  (DeCA), a supermarket chain for military installations with over 250 stores globally. The project was for an existing 117,000 sq. ft. store that CTA was asked to remodel with a new, 100% natural and low global warming potential refrigeration system. The system selected and installed was an ammonia/CO₂ cascade system with nine ammonia chiller modules and two CO₂ racks. Doherty’s presentation provided detailed information regarding the installation, start-up, and operation of the ammonia/CO₂ system.
