We're happy to announce the first round of case studies selected to be presented at this year's ATMO America conference from Accent Refrigeration, Frick Industrial Refrigeration, Heat Transfer Technologies, Embraco and Evapco & Permacold.

The ATMOsphere Review Panel is pleased to announce the first round of case study selections for ATMOsphere America 2018 taking place on June 12-14 in Long Beach, California.

Accent Refrigeration, Frick Industrial Refrigeration, International Copper Association, Heat Transfer Technologies & MTL Technologies, Embraco and Evapco & Permacold will discuss their innovative natural refrigerant-based technologies at the conference.

The presentations are:

Accent Refrigeration Systems | Ammonia / CO2 ice rink using a limited charge system with 100% energy recovery by Art Sutherland

The Wells Fargo Ice Arena in Anchorage, Alaska was faced with a failing refrigeration system, which utilized 6000 pounds of ozone depleting R-22 Refrigerant. The ice rink floor had a new steel piping grid which was not large enough for glycol or brine.

Faced with the possibility that they might have to replace their very expensive new steel piping grid to accommodate a secondary coolant, the University was thrilled to learn from Accent Refrigeration Systems about the potential to utilize CO2 as an indirect coolant and the saftey benefits gained with a reduced charge primary ammonia refrigeration system.

This presentation will detail the many benefits realized including eliminating a refrigeration plant inside of the building, reducing their electrical consumtion by almost half and recoverying waste energy for heating within the campus facility all while eliminating an ozone depleting-high global warming refrigerant.

Frick Industrial Refrigeration | Frick low charge central system by Zan Liu

This case study will review a recent installation of the Frick Low Charge Central System (LCCS). The presentation will cover: reason why the central low charge system was selected, how the LCCS is different from other available low charge systems on the market, the overview of the system installation and the operational experience.

Heat Transfer Technologies | Performance testing of MicroGroove heat exchangers with natural refrigerants by Yoram Shabtay

Reduced internal volume of coils made with smaller-diameter copper tubes allows for a reduction in refrigerant charge compared to conventional heat exchangers. Especially for propane and isobutane systems, the smaller refrigerant volume allows for the desired cooling capacities to be reached without exceeding refrigerant charge limitations.

Recently obtained system test data results provided by a North American manufacturer of light-commercial refrigeration equipment are presented. MicroGroove copper-tube heat exchangers are used along with natural refrigerants. Performance comparisons are made for several models of cooling cabinets currently sold to end-users in North America. For ambient temperatures of 75 ºF and 55% RH, conventional designs using R134a and R404A refrigerants are compared with new designs using R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) refrigerants, respectively. The effects of variables such as heat exchangers size, refrigerant charge and energy efficiency are also examined.

Embraco | FMXA6C Fullmotion compressor reduces noise and improves efficiency in medical refrigerators by John Prall

The Embraco FMXA6C Fullmotion Compressor represents the latest generation of solutions with variable speed technology. It provides better temperature control, produces very low noise levels, operates on a wider voltage range and delivers the company’s commitment to optimizing energy efficiency. The compact compressor is designed to be used with the natural refrigerant R600a. It also has several advantages for new refrigerator designs, mainly those with limited internal space, including small medical coolers, small beverage coolers, small ice makers, and high efficiency domestic refrigerators

Evapco & Permacold | Applying packaged low charge ammonia systems to a high rise freezer by Kurt Liebendorfer - Evapco & Jeff Buxton - Permacold

Part of this large project includes the construction of a 110 ft. tall rack supported high rise 0ºF freezer, which also includes the latest in automated material handling and storage racking systems.

This case study evaluates and discusses the many benefits packaged low charge ammonia systems provide including lower energy consumption, easier energy management, easier serviceability, safer operation, lower cost and lower regulatory burden.
