ATMOsphere America Conference to Feature Case Studies in Carbon Dioxide Refrigeration

The ATMOsphere America Conference, to be held June 18-19 at the Westin San Francisco Market Street Hotel, San Francisco, CA, will feature a series of presentations related to carbon dioxide refrigeration technology. Commercial refrigeration session topics will be:

The Effects of Mechanical Sub-cooling and its Benefits, by Jeffery Gingras, Systemes LMP. The case study demonstrates that mechanical sub cooling increases the quality of the refrigerant prior to the expansion valve. This methodology helps Systemes LMP in achieving a higher percentage of liquid than flash gas and increases the refrigeration capacity as well as the Energy Efficiency Ratio. When using mechanical sub cooling one will be able to obtain 21% more efficiency and consume less energy than a conventional synthetic system in warmer climates. This is strictly based on power consumption.

The Importance of Taking a Systems Approach to CO2 Installations, by Louis Morris, Parker.
This paper will review Parker/Micro Thermo Technologies' experience with the CO2 refrigeration installation at the IGA Terrebonne (Quebec) supermarket. When Sobeys decided to use CO2 for the refrigeration in all its new stores several years ago, Micro Thermo Technologies adapted and developed new control components to support Sobeys' efforts. The results of these efforts in terms of energy usage and overall control improvements will be reviewed in this case study, along with best practices and lessons learned.

Case study of the CO2 system at the Whole Foods Market in the San Fransicso Castro district, by Tom D. Wolgamot, DC Engineering; Tristam Coffin,Whole Foods Market; and Dan O’Brien, Zero Zone. This case study examines the successful application of a partnership approach to the design, installation, and operation of the CO2/407A cascade refrigeration system in the Whole Foods in the Castro district of San Francisco. Long-term partners worked collaboratively to deliver a system that met Whole Foods sustainable criteria for equipment costs, installation costs, and energy costs. This case study will review the expectations set forth by Whole Foods and the overall project delivery method that lead to a successful project. Comparative system costs will be reviewed as a mean of demonstrating the positive results. Lessons that were learned will also be discussed so that others may successfully deploy CO2 systems in the North American market.
