A presentation by HyChill on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer drew upon the Australian automotive air conditioning sector’s many years of experience with the safe use of hydrocarbons and the relevance of this undertaking to countries beyond Australia. Market share analysis has revealed that the share of hydrocarbons (HCs) exceeds 10% in the Australian motor vehicle air-conditioning (MAC) service sector.

The accelerated phase-out of HCFCs will require Article 5 countries ("developing countries") to adopt alternative refrigerants that have both low ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP). However, when it comes to choosing low GWP alternatives Article 5 countries need greater clarity about which are viable for use in different systems and applications. The GIZ presentation about the leaflet “Applications for low-GWP replacement for HCFC-22” aims to address this issue.
