Hiroaki Suzuki, AEON's Manager of Sustainability, described the retailer's public commitment to install natural refrigerants in November 2011. With around 598 stores in Japan, AEON has a sustainability principle based on four priorities, one of which is to contribute to a low carbon society. Since the company decided to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1.84 million tons in 2008, it began to introduce natural refrigerants (CO2) in all new stores, while converting an existing 3,500 stores to CO2. A large-scale installation can be found at the AEON mall Makuhari Shintoshin, opened in December 2013.
