The use of R744 expands the opportunity for geothermal heat pumps according to the presentation by Marc Portnoff, Thar Geothermal, LLC at ATMOsphere America 2014 R744 allows for a direct exchange design. By and large the R744 direct exchange geothermal heat pump is 30% more efficient than a standard ground source geothermal system, which tends to be 40-60% more efficient than an air side heat pump.

About the speaker(s)

Marc Portnoff

Mr. Portnoff is the General Manger at Thar Geothermal, LLC. His primary focus has been the development of the world’s first commercial scale, all natural refrigerant, direct exchange, geothermal system. He is a certified NACE and International Ground Source Heat Pump Association geothermal installer. He is involved in both the design and fabrication of the heat pump skid and the design and installation of the geothermal well field. Systems under test have demonstrated reduced heating and cooling costs, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Prior to joining Thar Geothermal, Mr. Portnoff managed product and process innovation, at Carnegie Mellon University, for over fifty industrial sponsors and five governmental agencies. His technical specialties include development of renewable energy processes, clean energy systems, nanomaterials and catalysts, and environmental gas sensors and sensor systems.

He is a conference speaker, author and co-author of several dozen technical papers and patents. He earned a Bachelor degree from Vanderbilt University and a Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University, both in Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering.
