Maho Ito of Sanden International USA and Ken Eklund, Washington State University Energy Program laboratory, presents test results of CO2 heat pump water heaters. Laboratory tests have shown an Energy Factor (EF) of 3.35 and Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.2 at outside ambient temperature of 67°F(19.4°C), compared to average electric resistance water heater of less than 1.0 EF. Field tests at four single-family homes in North Pacific States are currently ongoing, with results so far indicating a field performance very similar to that predicted from the lab test results.

Maho Ito

 

Ms. Maho Ito is CO2 product manager of Sanden International USA. She has worked with Sanden for over 11 years and is responsible for product planning and marketing of CO2 heat pump water heaters in North and South America. Maho graduated from Ibaraki University, Japan with a degree in Education. Currently she is pursuing her Master's Degree in Business Administration with Michigan State University.


Ken Eklund

 

Ken Eklund is the building science team leader at the Washington State University Energy Program in Olympia, WA. He and his team focus on energy code implementation, building science research and training. Eklund has over 30 years of experience in energy efficiency and renewable energy research, training, demonstration, program development, implementation and management, and is an experienced research project manager.

His current projects include: Managing technology innovation research for BPA in the lab and field testing advanced, split-system HPWHs for performance (TIP 292) and demand response potential (TIP 302); Managing a large ventilation effectiveness study in tight homes for NEEA; Developing curriculum for a baccalaureate applied building science degree under a grant from the National Science Foundation.

In the past, Mr. Eklund managed the Idaho Exhaust Air Heat Pump Study for BPA, and the State Technology Advancement Collaborative (STAC) Heat Pump and Air Conditioner Performance Enhancement Research Project in partnership with BPA; the Energy Trust of Oregon; and subcontractors Ecotope, Stellar Processes, and state energy offices. He has been with the WSU Energy Program since 2010, and was with the Idaho Energy Office for 21 years. His education includes a B.A. in history from Stanford and a J.D. from the University of Idaho.
