Together with UK retailer Sainsbury’s, in 2013 Carrier Transicold started field trials of its first trailer refrigeration system using CO2, based on a NaturaLINE unit. In 2014 the new E-Drive Natural Refrigerant Trailer prototype was launched, a unit dedicated to road transport using a closed-loop system. This presentation describes the prototype (world premiere) which is fully autonomous and driven by an independent diesel engine. It comes charged at the factory with a defined amount of CO2 refrigerant and this quantity of natural refrigerant stays inside the refrigeration circuit, is compressed then expanded and compressed again in a closed loop system. The benefit to the user is that there is no need to recharge the system every day and no need for a heavy infrastructure to store the natural refrigerant. This presentation paves the way for future refrigerated transportation systems and is in-line with the European F-Gas legislation aimed at decreasing the use of high-GWP refrigerants.
