John Scherer explored the growth of low-charge ammonia systems in the industrial sector and how it can go a long way to supplying the mega-trend of increasing demand for cold storage in the U.S. As R22 is phased out, Scherer expressed an expectation that the market will adopt to low-charge ammonia as its long-term solution.

John Scherer has specialized in ice, cold storage and food distribution facility design, construction and operations for 35 years. During this time, Mr. Scherer’s designs, systems and related equipment have shipped to seven countries. John is a past National President of RETA (Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association) and originator of RETA’s certification program for industrial refrigeration plant operators and technicians.

Mr. Scherer holds five United States patents and their fifteen international counterparts, all relative to food, water and power sustainability. Particular emphasis is placed on high efficiency, economical ammonia absorption and ammonia compression refrigeration systems. His most recent patent and patents pending form the basis of NXTCOLDTM ERIC (Electronic Refrigerant Injection Control) VLC (Very Low Charge) ammonia refrigeration technology.
