Marc-André Lesmerises - Products innovations in the field of natural refrigerants

PDF document
published on 13 June 2012

Carnot's presentation highlights results of two recent projects. The first project shows a highly efficient ammonia/CO2 system in a distribution centre with reduced refrigerant charge and low system cost. Efficiency numbers, cost and general results are presented. The second project together with leading Canadian supermarket retailer Sobeys demonstrates how to introduce leading edge CO2 as primary fluid technologies and practices for refrigeration system design and operation. This presentation shows the real energy consumption data and the potential the systems have for other stores in North America.

Torben Funder-Kristensen - Trends in CO2 Refrigeration

PDF document
published on 13 June 2012

This presentation provides a historical overview of global CO2 technology developments during the past decade, closely examining the technology advances, implementation and adoption in the global industrial refrigeration and food retail segments. A specific overview of CO2 systems in North America is depicted showing a current case study of the first transcritical CO2 booster system installed in the US. The presentation also covers design benefits, system challenges, efficiency thresholds compared to other refrigerants, and concludes with an outlook for how the North America market can overcome adoption barriers - specifically training and capital costs constraints.

Douglas Schmidt - Propane Compressors for Light Commercial Refrigeration Segment in US Market

PDF document
published on 13 June 2012

Douglas Schmidt from compressor manufacturer Embraco explains that propane can be considered as the most interesting refrigerant both for low evaporating temperature field as well as for positive temperature evaporation appliances. Recent EPA SNAP positive conclusion opens opportunity in US household and light commercial refrigeration applications. He presents comparative analysis of different types of propane applications, including a performance testing (R290 vs R404A) of a Ben &Jerry freezer produced by IARP for a Unilever field test in US with an Embraco compressor as well as a comparative performance testing (R290 vs R404A) of a True Manufacturing appliance for the US market and more.

Richard Maruya (with Steven Mella) - EPA-Approved Multiblend Pure‐ Hydrocarbon Refrigerant Used for Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration

PDF document
published on 13 June 2012

Richard Maruya presents the first hydrocarbon refrigerant to be approved for sale in the United States, namely R441a, a blend of pure hydrocarbons. He shows that compared to single‐component hydrocarbons, these blended hydrocarbons can demonstrate higher energy savings, reduced charge rates, lower risk of flammability, smaller size system components, improved cooling capacity, faster cooling operation and reduced component wear. His presentation describes the successful use of R441a in a Whirlpool residential refrigerator, a Haier residential refrigerator and a Toyota T100 truck, as well as case study results for use of R443a in two commercial air‐conditioning units at Cal Expo. Operational efficiency and cost results are presented, along with a discussion of lessons learned and plans for the next installations.
