Masood Ali

Masood Ali is the Global Leader of Center of Excellence (COE) for Alternative Systems with Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration. The COE provides global leadership in developing state-of the-art technological solutions utilizing advanced refrigeration and modified cycles, and very low charge ammonia cascade systems providing energy efficiency and environmentally friendly (LCCP) solutions. Masood has designed and validated the-state-of-the-art alternative systems such as the transcritical condensing unit with split cycle with two stage compression, the trans-critical booster system with two stage expansion for supermarkets, and a low charge - high efficiency NH3/CO2 system for supermarkets and cold storage. Masood manages the strategic innovation process by inspiring the COE team to seek breakthrough in technology by inculcating strategic and visionary thinking beyond the obvious.

Masood holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has 28 years of experience in providing systems solutions specializing in heat transfer and implementing new technologies in supermarket refrigeration, power generation and petrochemical industries. He is a member of ASHRAE, a corresponding member of ASHRAE 10.7, a member of CANENA Technical Harmonization Sub-Committee and of UL JTG for Flammable Refrigerants.

Jim Armer



Assistant Director of Energy Services, CTA, Inc.

Jim Armer is a Licensed Professional Engineer and a Certified Energy Manager with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University. Jim joined CTA, Inc. in 2005 and is the Assistant Director of Energy Services and a Refrigeration Group Manager in Boise, ID. Over the last several years he has designed and evaluated the performance of refrigeration systems for new and remodel supermarket projects. Jim’s current focus is on the development, advancement, and integration of refrigeration technology to capture energy efficiency and sustainable system design. He has developed expertise in designing systems with alternative and natural refrigerants and leads multiple industry-shaping research, development, and deployment driven projects.

Mirko Bernabei



Technical Director, SCM Frigo

Mirko graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Padua with a Master’s degree in Refrigeration. Mirko joined SCM FRIGO at the end of 2001 as a Project Engineer. Since 2004 he has been engaged in the design and development of CO2 systems and since 2009 of NH3 systems. He currently holds the position of Technical Director and R&D Manager of the SCM Group.

Jack M. Callahan



Senior Research Advisor, Bonneville Power Administration

Mr. Callahan is a senior mechanical engineer with over thirty years experience in energy efficiency and demand side management. He is currently working for Bonneville Power Administration in the Energy Efficiency group as Emerging Technology Research Lead. At BPA he has developed BPA’s emerging technology assessment framework (E3T), created and manages the E3TNW web site and technical advisory groups, and provides technical leadership for BPA’s portfolio of emerging technology assessments. He serves as a Utility Technical Advisor for the Electric Power Research Institute and as a member of the Northwest Regional Emerging Technology Advisory Council. His current research work is focused on creating better, faster, and cheaper M&V approaches for the assessment of emerging technologies, including self-reporting performance, load-based HVAC testing, and low cost submetering.

Marc Chasserot



CEO, shecco

Marc Chasserot is a specialist in natural refrigeration with over 15 years of experience in the HVAC&R sector, starting as the Marketing Manager for the Norsk Hydro business unit specialised in CO2 transcritical refrigeration and heating. He worked closely with several Japanese manufacturers selling the market innovative "CO2 Ecocute heatpumps".

In 2006 Marc founded the industry leading website for CO2 cooling and heating experts worldwide, called www.R744.com. This was followed by three additional industry resources for hydrocarbons, water and ammonia (namely: www.hydrocarbons21.com, www.R718.com and www.ammonia21.com).

Marc is co-founder and CEO of shecco, an independent market development company specialised in bringing Natural Refrigerants 'faster to market', working with numerous companies worldwide. Marc has chaired and organised several international workshops bringing together leading policy and industry experts to discuss 'how to bring natural refrigerants' faster to market, known as 'ATMOsphere'. He is also an active member of ASHRAE.

Ed Cheng



Associate Professor and Program Head of Mechanical Engineering, San Francisco State University

Ed Cheng is Associate Professor and Program Head of Mechanical Engineering at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Ed has over 20 years of experience in the fields of energy conversion systems, energy efficiency, and air pollutant emissions. He co-founded the Energy Systems master’s degree program at SFSU, and develops and teaches courses covering subjects such as heat transfer, advanced thermalfluids, HVAC systems, and building energy simulation. Ed also served as Assistant Director for SFSU’s Industrial Assessment Center, a U.S. Department of Energy-funded program that carries out energy audits for small- and medium-sized industrial facilities throughout Northern California.

Ed received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and has dual master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California.

Dr. Rolf Christensen holds a M.Sc. in Heat and Power Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Lund Institute of Technology. He also holds an Executive Master in Technology Management from Chalmers University. His professional experience includes three years as an Engineer in the merchant marines and over five years as a Consultant for heat and power plant engineering & energy conservation. For six years, Dr. Christensen also held a position as an Associate Professor in heat and power plant engineering at the Lund Institute of Technology. 

Dr. Christensen has been with Alfa Laval since 1998 and has worked in various specialist and management positions, such as Manager for the heat & mass transfer department, testing laboratory, new concept development and concept portfolio management. He has also held a position as a Business Development Manager for refrigeration and Product Portfolio Manager for industrial refrigeration. He has been driving the development of plate heat exchangers for transcritical COas well as plate heat exchangers for ammonia heat pumps and evaporation.

Steven Cousins

Steven Cousins is responsible for performance, safety, and quality requirements for Coca-Cola coolers, vending machines and fountain dispensers in North America.

Over his 23-years with The Coca-Cola Company, Steven has had varied responsibilities with beverage machines, including the development and the commercialization of fountain dispensers, oversight of quality production with appliance manufacturers, laboratory performance testing, and efficiency improvements in existing equipment.

Steven is a degreed and Registered Professional Engineer, and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer. He serves on the ASHRAE 32.1 SPC (vending machines), and is a member of CSA committees C804 (vending machines), C827 (food service refrigerators), and C657 (Refrigerated Display Cabinets).

Ian Crookston

Ian Crookston is responsible for national utility (electricity, heating fuels and water) lifecycle (procurement, consumption and conservation) spend optimization. Sobeys (www.sobeys.com) is one of Canada's two national retail grocery and food distribution companies with annual revenues of more than $23.9 billion (CAD). Sobeys is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Company Limited and owns or franchises more than 1,500 stores in all 10 provinces under retail banners that include Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Price Chopper, Thrifty Foods and Lawtons Drugs as well as more than 370 retail fuel locations. Troy Davis



Energy Manager, Mayekawa USA MYCOM

Troy is the Energy Manager for Mayekawa USA MYCOM promoting the use of natural refrigerant equipment solutions that the Company has to offer to their Global customers. Based in San Francisco, he works with clients introducing Mayekawa’s natural refrigerant solutions and how to integrate this technology into their customer’s facilities and projects. With a focus on overall energy cost reduction and carbon emission reduction, Troy promotes a wide variety of solutions including CO2 trans-critical heat pumps, NH3 packaged heat pumps, NH3/CO2 secondary systems, low charge packaged NH3 chillers, ADsorption chillers and ultra-low temperature air cycle refrigeration systems.

He has worked in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry for 30 years, first as a service and installation technician covering a wide variety of applications including food/beverage processors, cold storage facilities, supermarkets, hotels/resorts, mixed use buildings and healthcare facilities. He has also worked for a consulting mechanical engineering firm and has been past President of a refrigeration contracting company that specializes in natural refrigerant products including the installation of North America’s first commercially available, CO2 trans-critical water source CO2 heat pump installed at a winery in Napa Valley. Other projects have included CoGeneration (CHP) systems and thermal driven chillers including ADsorption and ABsorption units. Troy is a licensed California Contractor with General (B), HVAC (C20) and Refrigeration (C38) licenses and is an active member of ASHRAE, RETA and RSES organizations.

Peter Dee



Sales & Service Director, Danfoss North America, Danfoss

Peter Dee is Sales & Service Director of Danfoss Electronics North America, a $400 million subsidiary and largest market for the global manufacturer of high-efficiency heating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and motion systems. He has over 28 years of industry experience. Peter joined Danfoss in 2012 and leads the companies’ development of business in supermarkets and commercial refrigeration, responsible for accelerating the adoption of natural refrigerants and technologies to reduce energy consumption.

Prior to joining Danfoss Peter was President of Cool Controls and Energy MCS, based in Ireland. He has a Master’s of Business Administration degree in Management from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering.

Paul Delaney



Senior Engineer, Southern California Edison

Paul Delaney has been an energy and energy efficiency professional for 38 years, and is currently a Senior Engineer at Southern California Edison. He is responsible for the evaluation of new technologies that can reduce demand and energy consumption for Edison industrial, large commercial, manufacturing and agriculture customers. Paul is an experienced speaker, panelist and recognized utility expert in natural and alternative refrigerants for refrigeration applications. Mr. Delaney was a former Vice President for the American Utility Network, National Account manager for Edison Source and Senior Energy engineer for the United States Navy. Mr. Delaney holds a BS in Environmental Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, and is a member of ASHRAE, ASME and SME.

Brian Dobbs



Sr. Energy Engineer , VaCom Technologies

Brian Dobbs, Sr. Energy Engineer at VaCom Technologies, has extensive experience in energy analysis for both commercial refrigeration and industrial refrigeration systems. Brian graduated with honors from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Brian is experienced with DOE2.2R simulation and has participated in numerous projects in the field of building energy performance. As VaCom’s LEED specialist, Brian has had the opportunity to participate in several high-profile assignments, including the development of a LEED-certified pilot store for a national supermarket chain, the development of a net-zero energy high-rise refrigerated warehouse, and the development of the “LEED for Retail” rating standard. Brian has also been involved in development and implantation of control strategies for refrigerated warehouses, including integration of demand and energy efficiency logic.

Paige Dunn



CSR and Sustainability Project Lead, Red Bull North America

Paige Dunn is the CSR and Sustainability Project Lead for Red Bull North America. She supports projects varying from Cooler Technology to Sustainable Event activation. Red Bull has and continues to invest in Hydrocarbon Cooler Technology.

Red Bull is an active member of Refrigerants, Naturally! – a non-profit initiative of companies committed to combat climate change and ozone layer depletion by substituting harmful fluorinated gases with natural refrigerants with a focus on their point-of-sale cooling applications.

Prior to Red Bull, Paige graduated from Pepperdine University and was recruited to implement Sustainable strategy for Red Bull North America.

Ken Eklund



Building Science and Standards Team Leader, Washington State University Energy Program

Ken Eklund is the building science team leader at the Washington State University Energy Program in Olympia, WA. He and his team focus on energy code implementation, building science research and training. Eklund has over 30 years of experience in energy efficiency and renewable energy research, training, demonstration, program development, implementation and management, and is an experienced research project manager.

His current projects include: Managing technology innovation research for BPA in the lab and field testing advanced, split-system HPWHs for performance (TIP 292) and demand response potential (TIP 302); Managing a large ventilation effectiveness study in tight homes for NEEA; Developing curriculum for a baccalaureate applied building science degree under a grant from the National Science Foundation.

In the past, Mr. Eklund managed the Idaho Exhaust Air Heat Pump Study for BPA, and the State Technology Advancement Collaborative (STAC) Heat Pump and Air Conditioner Performance Enhancement Research Project in partnership with BPA; the Energy Trust of Oregon; and subcontractors Ecotope, Stellar Processes, and state energy offices. He has been with the WSU Energy Program since 2010, and was with the Idaho Energy Office for 21 years. His education includes a B.A. in history from Stanford and a J.D. from the University of Idaho.

Mike Ellinger



Global Maintenance & Refrigeration Coordinator, Whole Foods Market

Mike began his career with Whole Foods Market as a facility manager for the Rocky Mountain region in 2006. Today he oversees maintenance and refrigeration programs for the company on a national basis. He is involved in key refrigeration programs utilizing advanced technologies, all natural refrigerants and secondary systems. He coordinates the GreenChill partnership program with the EPA for the company. He is on the steering committee for the U.S. DOE’s Commercial Building Energy Alliance as well as their refrigeration and space conditioning teams.

Prior to Whole Foods Market Mike worked for Carrier Corporation and has over 18+ years experience with commercial refrigeration systems.

Michael Englebright



Head of Engineering, Woolworths

Mr. Englebright holds Refrigeration and HVAC accreditations from RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) in Melbourne Australia. He has over 15 years of experience in Natural Refrigerant Technologies in both subcritical and transcritical applications from around the globe with different retailers and OEMs. Mr. Englebright served as Global Applications Engineering Manager in his previous employment at Danfoss. In this position he was responsible for managing specialized CO2 projects, the development of CO2 refrigerated products and services, and formulating and implementing training procedures for safe and efficient CO2 system installations. Mr. Englebright used to serve as CAREL's Global Key Accounts Manager for Retail, promoting natural refrigerants and energy solutions to end users and OEM’s. He is also very active in lobbying for the use of natural refrigerants at leading international seminars. Currently he serves as the Head of Engineering at Woolworths.

John Gallaher



Business Development Manager for Commercial Applications, Güntner US

John Gallaher is the Business Development Manager for Commercial Applications for Güntner US, a world leader in heat exchanger technology. He joined Güntner US in June of 2018 after spending over 25 years in a variety of positions including engineering, refrigeration systems R&D, and sales leadership in the refrigeration compressor systems industry for major North America OEM’s.  During his time in the refrigeration industry, John has been involved in the development and introduction of various CO2 technologies for commercial applications and expanding the use of these technologies to the refrigerated processing and storage industry. John is a member of technical committees at IIAR, the Global Cold Chain Alliance, and ASHRAE.

Jeffrey Gingras



Vice President of Sales, Systemes LMP

Jeffrey Gingras, Vice president of Systemes LMP, has been involved in finding environmentally friendly solutions for supermarkets and warehouses since 1998. Through his understanding of the market trends in the refrigeration industry, Jeffrey aligned Systemes LMP in a more sustainable and environmentally conscious refrigeration product development. In 2000, the company introduced its first pumping station with a fluid cooler and heat reclaim in a Sobeys supermarket. It was the company’s first experience trying to reduce the quantity of HCFC in a refrigeration system, as it was clear within the industry that the step towards such new technologies was inevitable.

Jeff was also involved with Systemes LMP's introduction of it`s solution for medium temperature using ice slurry in 2002, a system, ideal for retrofit installations, using latent heat to extract energy in the evaporators from the air. He also played a role in Systemes LMP’s decision to build its own testing facility to develop a solution for low temperature applications. Here, solutions for various applications using cascade, subcritical & transcritical CO2 were developed. Jeff is proud to say that Systemes LMP has developed one of the most energy efficient transcritical solutions on the market, with the flexibility for installation in most climates and energy efficiency due to its lubrication technology & mechanical subcooling.  

Sam Gladis

Sam has nearly thirty years of experience in applying industrial refrigeration systems in food and beverage, cold storage and distribution, chemical and petrochemical as well as recreational applications. Together with expertise in applying ice thermal storage and industrial heat pumps, Sam has an extensive history in delivering energy efficient natural refrigeration systems for the numerous customers he has served.

Derek Hamilton



Business Development Manager, Azane

Derek is Business Development Manager at Azane Inc, the US subsidiary of Star Refrigeration. Azane manufacture low charge, high efficiency ammonia refrigeration packages for the US market.

Derek joined the Star Refrigeration Group in 2005 and has held the position of Senior Design Engineer and Design Manager before moving to his current role at Azane. Derek has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of ammonia refrigeration and heat pump systems. In recent years, Derek led the development of a range of low charge, packaged, air cooled ammonia refrigeration systems which allow modular installation without the need for a machinery room. Derek has a keen interest in the promotion of low charge ammonia as an excellent solution for R22 system replacement and an ideal alternative to HFCs in many applications.

Derek is Chartered with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is an active member of IIAR, IIR and IOR and is a regular contributor to industry events and publications.

Richard Heath



Sr. Director of Energy Optimization, Source Refrigeration

In May of 2013, Richard joined one of the Partners in the Carpinteria project, Source Refrigeration, as Sr. Director of Energy Optimization.

Grandson of an Independent Grocer from Macon, Georgia, Richard began his career in the In Supermarket Industry as a Technical Training Consultant over 20 years ago, after serving as an Instructor for the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power Training Unit at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in upstate NY. Richard's first refrigeration OEM position was as Product Manager for Kysor Warren in the early 90’s; he then moved to Hillphoenix as the Director of Innovative Technologies concentrating on Advanced Refrigeration Technologies, Food Safety, and Controls Integration. After a 7 year hiatus, Richard returned to Hillphoenix as Director of Remodel Programs in 2007.

In 2010 the opportunity to put these remodel concepts to-the-test was presented by SUPERVALU with an offer to take on the role of Director of Energy Innovations and Projects. During his role, the Nation’s first all-natural supermarket refrigeration system was designed and installed in an Albertsons Remodel in Carpinteria, California.


Jeffrey Hogue

Jeffrey Hogue is a respected leader in Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability in the international food and agriculture value chains over the past 18 years. At McDonald’s he works across a variety of sustainability and corporate social responsibility areas including the environment, community engagement, sustainability reporting, and integration of sustainability strategy into the business.

Prior to McDonald’s Jeffrey was based in Copenhagen, Denmark as Corporate Officer and Vice President of Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility for Danisco A/S, now part of DuPont. In his role, he led the successful integration of Danisco's Sustainability and CSR approach and other critical Danisco functions including Quality/Food Safety, Regulatory, Security, Environmental Health and Safety, Life Cycle Assessment, Ethics and Compliance within the new DuPont organization. In his transition from Danisco to McDonald’s, he served as a founding Expert in Residence for the Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco, California.

Jeffrey has been active in international standards development as a D-Liaison expert in the development of ISO26000 - Guidance on Social Responsibility, and is the served as the Liaison delegate for Danisco in The World Business Council for Sustainable Development. He has a Master’s of Science in Public Health and Community Medicine from the University of Washington a Certificate in Integrated Administration from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business and an Executive Certificate in Sustainable Management from the Presidio Graduate School.

Harrison Horning

Harrison Horning is Director of Maintenance for Retail Business Services, LLC, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize.  His role is focused on supporting Hannaford Supermarkets, with 181 stores in five northeastern US states.  His current work includes collaborative efforts to address sustainability and climate impacts.  He has over 25 years of experience in the field of facilities and energy management, encompassing a wide range of commercial, industrial and institutional facilities. 

Chris Huffmann



Controls Project Manager, Neelands Refrigeration LTD

Chris has worked for Neelands Refrigeration in a number of capacities since 1989. In 2012 he was named Controls manager, responsible for application engineering, estimating, project planning, commissioning and measurement and verification. Chris’ is experienced in the commercial supermarket, big box, warehouse and food processing markets. Chris is completely intimate with the unique challenges associated with effective integration of control methodology in CO2 applications. He also brings significant experience creating custom field programming for the Micro Thermo Technologies and Reliable control systems for end customers and contractors.

Maho Ito



CO2 Product Manager, Sanden International USA

Ms. Maho Ito is CO2 product manager of Sanden International USA. She has worked with Sanden for over 11 years and is responsible for product planning and marketing of CO2 heat pump water heaters in North and South America. Maho graduated from Ibaraki University, Japan with a degree in Education. Currently she is pursuing her Master's Degree in Business Administration with Michigan State University.

Barry Karnes



Principal Engineer - Refrigeration Products, Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

Barry Karnes has been employed with Underwriters Laboratories since 1980 in UL’s San Jose/Silicon Valley, CA office and has worked within the Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Department for his entire career. He is presently one of UL’s Principal Engineers with global technical responsibility for several UL standards such as the Standards for Hermetic Refrigerant Motor-Compressors, UL 60335-2-34; Drinking Water Coolers, UL 399; and Vending Machines, UL 751. He has also served as an alternate member to two National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) Code Making Panels.

Barry is a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of California, is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and has received three UL Professional Engineering Awards.

He has served his community for 11 years as an elected Director of a local Sanitary District. Barry is a private pilot and enjoys vacationing in Hawaii.

Tom Land



Office of Atmospheric Programs, GreenChill Partnership

Tom Land has worked to protect the earth’s ozone layer and fight climate change for more than 20 years in the EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs. He is now running the GreenChill Partnership program to help the supermarket industry reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases.

Marc-André Lesmerises

Marc-André graduated in 2003 as a Mechanical Engineer and has since designed several industrial and commercial cooling systems. Kathy Loftus

Eric is a graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology, with a Diploma of Trades Training. He holds a Canadian Red Seal certification as a Journeyman Refrigeration Mechanic and is a Class C Welder and Class B Gasfitter. He has ten years experience in the HVAC and refrigeration industry. His experience includes technical service for a geothermal heat pump manufacturer, as well as extensive geo-exchange design and installation, including ground loop, horizontal, vertical, and pond, lake, and ocean water loops, in addition to open loop systems.

Eric is the owner of Versatile Refrigeration International Inc and Versatile Refrigeration USA Inc.; companies primarily specializing in secondary refrigeration systems as well as controlled atmosphere systems for storage warehouses. Both companies also design, install, and service custom refrigeration systems for land based aqua-culture operations. Louis Morris

Louis has worked for Micro Thermo since 2003. In 2013 he was named Applied Engineering Manager, coordinating the engineering and quotation of refrigeration controls, HVAC and energy management systems. He previously served as a Field Application Specialist for 10 years, integrating systems in a variety of different locations: supermarkets, warehouses and food processing plants. These locations were located throughout the US and Canada. Bruce Nelson

Marc Portnoff



General Manger, Thar Geothermal, LLC

Mr. Portnoff is the General Manger at Thar Geothermal, LLC. His primary focus has been the development of the world’s first commercial scale, all natural refrigerant, direct exchange, geothermal system. He is a certified NACE and International Ground Source Heat Pump Association geothermal installer. He is involved in both the design and fabrication of the heat pump skid and the design and installation of the geothermal well field. Systems under test have demonstrated reduced heating and cooling costs, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Prior to joining Thar Geothermal, Mr. Portnoff managed product and process innovation, at Carnegie Mellon University, for over fifty industrial sponsors and five governmental agencies. His technical specialties include development of renewable energy processes, clean energy systems, nanomaterials and catalysts, and environmental gas sensors and sensor systems.

He is a conference speaker, author and co-author of several dozen technical papers and patents. He earned a Bachelor degree from Vanderbilt University and a Masters degree from Carnegie Mellon University, both in Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering.

Jason Robbins

Kathryn Rose

John S. Scherer



Manager of Engineering, Los Angeles Cold Storage Company

John Scherer has specialized in ice, cold storage and food distribution facility design, construction and operations for 35 years. During this time, Mr. Scherer’s designs, systems and related equipment have shipped to seven countries. John is a past National President of RETA (Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association) and originator of RETA’s certification program for industrial refrigeration plant operators and technicians.

Mr. Scherer holds five United States patents and their fifteen international counterparts, all relative to food, water and power sustainability. Particular emphasis is placed on high efficiency, economical ammonia absorption and ammonia compression refrigeration systems. His most recent patent and patents pending form the basis of NXTCOLDTM ERIC (Electronic Refrigerant Injection Control) VLC (Very Low Charge) ammonia refrigeration technology.

Douglas Schmidt

Doug is the Sales Manager of Embraco North America's Commercial Cooling Solutions division. He has 21 years of experience in the industry and has participated and/or led the design, innovation, manufacturing and testing of various refrigeration equipment. Mike Scofield



President, Conservation Mechanical Systems

Mike Scofield is a 1960 graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder with degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of California and Colorado. His activities in ASHRAE include serving as President of the San Jose, California, the Denver, Colorado and the Redwood Empire Section of Golden Gate Chapters of ASHRAE and as a member of Society Nominating Committee. As an author, Scofield has written several papers and articles dealing with the use of air-to-air heat exchangers and evaporative cooling techniques to reduce air conditioning electrical energy consumption. His paper "Building Ventilation: A Heat Pipe Economy Cycle" published in the October 1986 ASHRAE Journal received the 1987 ASHRAE Journal Best Paper Award. Based in Syracuse, N.Y. since 2005, Mr. Taeckens is involved in product development, including the introduction of the NaturaLINE™ unit, the world’s first and only container refrigeration system to use the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (CO2) with a global warming potential (GWP) of one. Mr. Taeckens is also responsible for the advancement of the new XtendFRESH™ container atmosphere control system, which uses innovative technologies to remove ethylene while actively controlling oxygen (O2) and CO2 levels, distinguishing it from other container atmosphere control products on the market today.

Mark Tomooka

He is a licensed PE in eighteen states, and has over 25 years of experience in facility engineering and project management. Marek Zgliczynski



Director, Fellow Researcher of R&D , Embraco

Marek Zgliczynski studied at the Turin Politechnic in Italy where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. In 1979, after completing his degree, Marek began his career as a researcher and project leader of new product development at Aspera Spa. 

A few years later, Marek transitioned to Embraco, becoming the Manager of Compressor Design. His successful efforts led to many promotions, including European Commercial Product and Technology Manager, Commercial Refrigeration Product Corporate Director and Corporate Fellow Researcher for the Commercial Refrigeration Segment. 

His main responsibility includes the development of household and light commercial refrigeration products. He also provides technical assistance to the sales team in order to promote Embraco products that align with customer feedback. 

Throughout his career, Marek has earned three U.S. patents and Gold Whirlpool Quality Team Award and he has published several pieces of literature for international conferences and events about refrigeration technology. In 2016, he was elected to a Chair of the IEC/SC61C Committee, in charge of the development of international product safety standards for refrigeration segment. He is also member in several other standardization bodies like ISO TC86/SC1/WG1, CEN TC182WG6 and WG12, IEC SC61DWG16 and UL STP471, Ashrae Member.
