In his presentation, Michel de Rooij of Ahold Europe discusses the steps performed by Ahold towards sustainable and cost effective CO2 refrigeration solutions in its stores. Today, Ahold already has 267 CO2 cascade and 3 CO2 transcritical stores in operation in Europe. In addition, de Rooij addresses the challenge to equip small stores with CO2.

Michel is the creator of the Next Week Open process, meaning a full store remodeling in eight days, inventor of a totally prefabricated and self-contained cooling/freezing/heating machine room with integrated heat pump, operating on residual heat from the refrigeration system, ending the use of natural gas. He is the developer of Ahold's own refrigeration furniture designs and technology, making energy saving day covers, high energy efficient fans and energy efficient LED lighting proactively driven by the organization itself. He is the driving force behind processes and innovations concerning sustainability, product quality, energy use, environmental- and economic responsibilities.
