John Skelton presents Sainsbury’s Supermarket investments in climate friendly technology resulting from their 20x20 sustainability plan. Considered a pioneer of CO2 transcritical refrigeration, the retailer now has 167 stores, including 166 supermarkets and 1 convenience store, using R744 technology. The retailer has also supported the development of the British Refrigeration Association short course on CO2 refrigeration, and funded familiarisation training fro its engineers with different pack manufacturers and with the retailer’s control supplier.

John Skelton joined Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Limited as an apprentice in 1984. He has spent his career in retail refrigeration working for and on behalf of various UK food retailers. He has been instrumental in reducing Sainsbury’s carbon footprint and the step change to CO2 refrigeration. John has delivered CO2 in over 160 stores and continues to champion the switch to natural refrigerant solutions.

John Skelton is currently Chairman of the British Retail Refrigeration Association End User Group and sits on both the Institute of Refrigeration’s Executive Council and its Technical Committee.
