Uniquely placed to provide delegations with valuable up-to-date information about climate-friendly cooling and heating technologies, for several years now shecco has been present as an official observer at the UN Montreal Protocol ozone & climate negotiations. The latest meeting, held in Bangkok, Thailand, at the end of June 2013 (33^rd Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol) saw shecco undertake a plethora of successful activities. As well as hosting its most well-attended UN meeting side event, 'ATMOsphere Bangkok 2013', shecco exhibited during the UN meeting and technology conference, and spoke at the technology conference organised after the Montreal Protocol meeting, an event attended by over 300 participants from industry, governments, environmental organisations, and academia.

"The global refrigerant market for refrigeration and air conditioning is moving very fast these days and governments around the world are hungry for the latest information”, says shecco’s Managing Director Marc Chasserot. “This week in Bangkok has been another opportunity for Montreal Protocol delegations to get the latest trends on natural refrigerants. I'm pleased to say that shecco has played a leading role in sharing this key information with government's worldwide. We had a successful side event during the OEWG, as well as a popular presentation during the Bangkok technology conference that followed”.

Increasingly aware of the availability of climate-friendly solutions, negotiators held formal discussions on the technical and financial aspects of addressing high-GWP HFCs for the first time since Montreal Protocol amendments to phase-down HFCs were proposed five years ago. “More and more, government delegations are warming up to the concept of technological “leapfrogging” and are seriously considering the adoption of technologies that not only resolve the ozone problem but are climate-friendly at the same time”, says Alexandra Maratou, shecco’s Deputy Public Affairs Manager.

The media and by extension the general public are also becoming increasingly aware of the links between ozone and climate protection, with Bloomberg and the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD) news releases on the Bangkok meeting outcomes quoting shecco’s Managing Director.
