The most extensive handbook on the use of CO2 Technology in different applications, presented at Atmosphere 2009 as part of an EU-funded project, is now available as a free download from the Atmosphere website.

The most up to date information about the use of the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide in the European Union is now publicly available as a download to all interested parties from the Atmosphere 2009 website. The manual is the result of the EU-funded project “NARECO2” – short for NAtural REfrigerant CO2” – that has brought together seven partners from all over Europe to share knowledge and spread best practice among the public. The manual, initially thought to be a training tool for installers, teachers, and students, has grown into a 500 pages long document about the use of CO2 (R744) in cooling, refrigeration, and heating. It provides practical and structured information on how to install, dimension, and maintain such a system, but also serves as a most complete guide for industry and policy decision makers wanting to learn more about the natural refrigerant's potential today and in the future. The NARECO2 project, finished with the Atmosphere 2009 conference, has reached its target to raise awareness of the significant potential of CO2 as a refrigerant in heating, cooling, and refrigeration.

Topics covered

Concretely, the NARECO2 manual introduces readers to the following topics:
  • Thermodynamic Topics
  • Industrial Systems
  • Commercial Refrigeration
  • CO2/R744 Mobile Air-Conditioning (MAC)
  • CO2 Heat Pumps
  • Safety and Leakages Control
  • Drivers for Implementation of CO2 Technology
  • Components
Background

The NARECO2 project has been running since 2007 to spread knowledge regarding the use of R744 to other European countries lagging behind in this rapidly growing area. The seven project partners involved: Catholic University Limburg (Belgium), SINTEF (Norway), University of Padova (Italy), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik (Germany), Danish Technological Institute (Denmark), and shecco (Belgium).
