Case studies by Emerson Climate TechnologiesSecop, Azane, RLS and Cooltech Applications have been selected for ATMOsphere America 2015. These cover a variety of different topics including the use of electronic controls in CO2 booster sytems, plug-in cabinets using hydrocarbon refrigerants, low charge ammonia, braze free refrigeration fittings and connections, as well as magnetic refrigeration.

The following case studies will be presented at ATMOsphere America 2015, which will take place on 25 & 26 June in Atlanta, Georgia:

The advantages of using electronic controls in CO2 booster systems
by Reggie O'Donoghue, Emerson Climate Technologies

The use of CO2-based transcritical booster systems in commercial refrgieration applications has increased exponentially in recent years. This growth is primarily due to food retailers' desire to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of emissions found in traditional refrigerants. With zero ozone depletion potential and a global warming potential of one, CO2 is a particularly viable natural refrigerant.

However, the barriers to greater adoption of CO2 booster systems are the refrigerant's higher operating pressures and declining efficiency in warmer ambient temperatures. Without the advent of advanced electronic controls, which precisely tune the system to match load requirements under a variety of ambient conditions, wider adoption of CO2 systems would not have been possible. This case study will present how electronic controls enable the effective use of a transcritical booster CO2 system in a southeastern United States city.

How to gain maximum efficiency in plug-in cabinets by using hydrocarbon refrigerants
by Alexander Adamitzki, Secop, presented by Drew Martin, Secop

The case study will focus on the combination of R290 as a refrigerant and the use of variable speed compressors to extend energy efficiency to a maximum in plug-in cabinets in the food retail sector. The presentation will explain why R600a is not an option for larger systems; although, it is more efficient than R290 in comparison to HFCs. The positive effects of a speed-controlled compress to energy consumption will also be highlighted.

The specific application of horizontal plug-in cabinets for rood retail will also be discussed, showing positive savings in tons of CO2 and CO2 equivalents, as well as the positive safety record of the cabinets in regard to HC flammability, with 900.000 cabinets in the field since 2006. The presentation will also touch on the challenges regarding EMI for the US and adapting the product to 115 Volt markets.

Low charge ammonia – the natural choice for frozen food distribution by Derek Hamilton, Azane

When a national frozen food chain was designing a new distribution centre, their specification called for a safe, natural and energy efficient refrigeration solution. The facility, incorporating a 0°F freezer space and 35°F dock, was being constructed as part of an ongoing project to modernize the firm’s distribution network. The client wanted to benefit from the efficiency and reliability of an ammonia system, while minimizing the quantity of ammonia used.

After consideration of various refrigeration options, the new facility was designed using Azane’s low charge, air cooled ammonia packages. The installation was completed in the summer of 2014 and has delighted the client by delivering low running costs and hassle-free operation. The case study will look at the design of the low charge packages used for this facility and discuss how the ease of installation, ease of use, and high efficiency design, are making low charge, packaged ammonia systems the natural choice for the temperature controlled storage industry.

Azane, part of the Star Refrigeration Group, started manufacturing in the US in 2014 and have a number of projects being installed in 2015. The presentation will give an overview of these projects and discuss the future of the low charge ammonia industry.

Braze-free refrigeration fittings and connections by Michael Duggan, RLS

Flame-free press fittings (RLS) may enhance the acceptance and adoption of natural refrigerants by eliminating the need for brazing, which is often a challenge and concern for original equipment manufacturing and repairs in the field. These mechanically installed, hermetically sealed connections are much stronger than tubing and provide a significantly reduced leak rate. This presentation will cover the in-depth testing, examples of installations and plans for product adjacencies including versions for additional metal systems.

First integrations of industrialized magnetic cooling devices into refrigerated cabinets by Vincent Delecourt, Cooltech Applications

Magnetic cooling is a groundbreaking technology using specific materials and water-based coolant liquid. This technology, based on the magneto-caloric effect, can produce heat or cold through a series of magnetization/demagnetization without any gas. Cooltech Applications has developed an industrialized device based on Magnetic Cooling, that will be dedicated to the commercial refrigeration market to begin with.

The first integrations into partners’ professional refrigerated cabinets have been completed. Different configurations (from 100 to 500 liters) and systems have been implemented. After tests, verifications and optimizations, all configurations have proven good results in terms of temperature (around +5°C in the cabinet). Different heat exchanger types and architectures have also been tested, enabling Cooltech and its partners to continue optimizing the final cabinets before the product launch.
