Just as ATMOsphere America has helped shape the global natural refrigerant market, Azane, is playing a leading role in the U.S., with its low-charge packaged ammonia freezers and chillers helping change the face of ammonia refrigeration. Azane, the U.S. subsidiary of Star Refrigeration, continues to increase its market penetration in the industrial refrigeration sector, and, in accordance with this growth, has signed on as a Bronze sponsor for ATMOsphere America 2015, to be held on 25 & 26 June in Atlanta, Georgia.

Azane: Reduced ammonia charge, reduced regulatory burden

Azane specialises in servicing small, refrigerated warehouses throughout the U.S. on the back of parent company Star Refrigeration’s years of experience manufacturing low-charge technology in the UK. Ammonia as a refrigerant has been around for longer than 100 years, but its low-charge evolution is now driving a rapid transition in the industrial cold storage industry in the U.S., given these systems are now able to do the work of much larger systems, while vastly reducing the required ammonia charge. A leading wholesale frozen food company in the U.S., which supplies the food service industry with a comprehensive range of fresh, frozen and grocery products, installed a system that reduced the ammonia charge by as much as 90%.

This is beneficial for end users in two senses: it significantly diminishes the cost and safety concerns surrounding ammonia refrigeration and it provides the perfect retrofit solution to facilitate the phase-out of R22 by 2020, as well as the impending limitations on HFCs in the U.S.

Azane has two low-charge ammonia units in its range - the Azanefreezer, a condensing unit for freezer and cooler applications, and the Azanechiller, designed for a wide variety of uses. The company will commence installations from a backlog of orders in the U.S., in 2015.

Azane’s condensing units have about five pounds (two kg) per ton of refrigerant (TR) and the chillers two pounds (one kg) per TR. By contrast, a recirculated overfeed central ammonia system commonly has 20 pounds (9kg) per ton while a DX system would have 10 pounds (5kg) per TR. The condensing units have cooling capacities ranging from 26 to 107 TR, the chillers from 60 to 294 TR.

Business development manager Derek Hamilton will play an active role during the conference. He will participate as a panelist in a dedicated Low Charge Ammonia Panel and will also moderate and present a case study on low charge ammonia for frozen food distribution applications in the Industrial Refrigeration Case Study Session, which will take place on Friday, 27 June 2015.
