The ATMOsphere Review Board has made its first round of selections for case studies to be presented at ATMOsphere Europe 2016, which will take place on 19 & 20 April in Barcelona, Spain. A second round of case study selections will be announced in the coming days.

Congratulations to CAREL, Colruyt Group, Cubigel Compressors, Efficient Energy, Frigo Consulting, Johnson Controls, LU-VE Group, NLR, Proklima and Sainsbury’s, who will present the following case studies during ATMOsphere Europe 2016.

High efficiency CO2 transcritical systems for all formats in warm climates, Diego Malimpensa, CAREL Industries

This case study will focus on the use of modulating ejectors that can be used in all formats of CO2 transcritical racks. The scope of this study is to demonstrate the benefits of using this technology, enhancing the energy efficiency of CO2 transcritical systems from small to big formats. The case study will present real data coming from laboratory testing and field trials, demonstrating the efficiency of such system as well as data from a next generation system using modulating ejectors and advanced control systems in a trial store coming in Switzerland in the first months of 2016.

Colruyt Group store cooling with propane compact chillers, Collin Bootsveld and Julien Meert, Colruyt Group

In 2013 Colruyt Group installed a first cooling installation on propane in OKay supermarket with 14 kg of R290. Although functioning well, the paperwork proved to be a high cost and the propane circuit had to be placed outside. Therefore a new development target was formulated, essentially aiming at a “plug and play” approach. The compact chillers supply up to 40 kW of cooling with 1,5 kg of R290. The tenfold lower refrigerant content makes it possible to integrate the cooling installation inside the building. The group will eventually equip all its 360 stores in Belgium with these installations. The case study will focus on the specific advantages of this type of compact propane cooling for the operations of Colruyt Group.

Low energy consumption in a R290 bottle cooler with variable speed compressor, Vicente Guilabert, Cubigel Compressors

In this case study, Cubigel Compressors is sharing their experience in a Bottle Cooler (HMBP) application test, demonstrating the energy saving of a complete system simply due to the use of a variable speed compressor with R290 as an alternative to R404A. Combining the use of high efficiency mechanical kits and variable speed electrical motors, the presented case will show energy savings up to 50 % when performing the test. The use of environmentally friendly R290 together with the energy saving coming from the improved COP of the compressor, reduces the CO2 emissions in more than 1.7 tonnes (in a period of 5 years) compared to a standard compressor.

A centrifugal compressor cooling system using water as working fluid, Jürgen Süß, Efficient Energy

This case study will introduce a new centrifugal compressor based cooling system, which is only using water as a working fluid. It will also explain the working principle of such compressor by showing the energetic performance at various operational conditions. Furthermore, field test results will be presented confirming the considerably high-energy efficiency of such system. Finally, the presentation will identify the next steps towards the wide industrialisation.

Experience with CO2 refrigeration systems for southern climates, Jonas Schönenberger, Frigo Consulting

Frigo Consulting will present data collected based on the first transcritical CO2 refrigerating system with three ejectors in Switzerland, built in summer 2013. This revolutionary system showed a simple and safe method to drastically reduce the energy consumption of a transcritical CO2 refrigerating system. After one year of experience, three further developed systems each with five ejectors and flooded evaporators on the low temperature side were built in Swiss supermarkets. The presentation will cover an analysis of the operation phases and performance results, including those collected during the exceptionally warm summer months of 2015, as well as challenges in designing and operating such systems.

Johnson Controls designs and develops biggest -80°C coldstore in Europe, Alexander Pachai, Johnson Controls Industries

The case study will present an analysis of the design and installation phases of a -80°C coldstore, the first and largest in Europe. Odense University Hospital (OUH) used to store their samples in 262 different -80° chest freezers across different departments of the hospital. This caused a relatively high-energy consumption and made it more difficult for researchers to find the samples they needed. OUH turned to Johnson Controls for the design and development of a new and unique cold store installation. Currently, a great amount of frozen tissue samples from OUH and other hospitals in the Southern Denmark region are centrally stored and kept in a database. The new solution reduces energy consumption by approximately 4 million Danish Krone or €618,660 per year when the coldstore is fully booked. A second 5°C anti room was installed for the exchange of tissue samples.

Use of innovative heat exchangers for natural fluid heat pumps - Project NxtHPG, Stefano Filippini and Umberto Merlo, LU-VE Group

This case study describes the activities of design and experimental verification of the new heat transfer geometry with tube diameter of only 5mm. LU-VE has also undertaken a study of the internal fluid dynamics of the heat pump, as often due to the restricted space within the machine, the position of the evaporator is not optimal. This causes imbalance of the air distribution, leading to further poor distribution of refrigerant within the circuits. Thanks to CFD simulation it has been possible to improve the internal fluid dynamics of the heat pump, with a significant increase in the performance of the evaporator and with an increase of heat pump COP.

A heat pump for space applications, Henk Jan van Gerner, NLR

NLR will present a heat pump demonstrator for space applications, which has been developed in a project funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). Traditional compressors are too heavy (20 kg) and cause excessive vibration, and can therefore not be used in a space application. For this reason, a lightweight (2 kg), low-vibration, centrifugal three-stage compressor system has been developed. The demonstrator uses isopentane (R601a) as refrigerant. Tests were carried out with the heat pump, and the measured Coefficient of Performance (COP) is significantly higher than the ESA requirement. The case study will showcase the lightweight compressor and explain why isopentane was chosen as refrigerant. In addition, experimental test results will be shown.

Development of climate friendlier truck refrigeration systems with R290, Presenter tbc, Proklima

This case study describes the use of low-GWP refrigerated transport systems for small and large trucks using R290 by Transfrig, a South-African manufacturer. The overall climate impact of the refrigeration system is minimized both through improving energy efficiency and eliminating the GWP of leaked refrigerants. The existing systems use R404A for all unit sizes and temperature levels and compressors are directly driven from the on-board diesel engine. The new systems using R290 are electrically powered via a diesel engine and alternator, and include a variable speed drive for capacity control.

Natural 4 Neutral in Convenience, Paul Arrowsmith, Sainsbury’s

Using CO2 as a refrigerant in their supermarket estate has been Sainsbury’s “business model” since 2010/11. The challenge has been to deliver a natural refrigerant solution that is neutral in energy, reliability and capital cost with reference to the current HFC convenience store solution. The presentation will briefly outline the current position of CO2 refrigeration systems in respect of Sainsbury’s supermarket estate. It will then describe the challenges and the process that was implemented to try and achieve a “Natural 4 Neutral”solution for the convenience stores. Furthermore, it will present an overview of the installed system. The installation having been operational for a year, the result of the trial will be presented against selected HFC benchmark stores, identifying the operational cost savings that have been achieved.
