The ATMOsphere Review Board has made its second round of selections for case studies to be presented at ATMOsphere Europe 2016, which will take place on 19 & 20 April in Barcelona, Spain. A third round of case study selections will be announced in the coming days.

Congratulations to Mayekawa Spain, SANDEN, Danfoss, DORIN, Emerson Climate Technologies, enEX and ProCold, who will present the following case studies during ATMOsphere Europe 2016.

NH3 high pressure application to heat recovery for high temperature hot water in food industry, Pedro Nogal, Mayekawa Spain

This field case study presents the use of natural refrigerants in an industrial food production company installed in Spain by the contractor ISOFRED in 2015. The main activities are the poultry slaughterhouse and production of chicken meat products. The presentation focuses on the case of the ammonia high pressure application to heat recovery for high temperature hot water, using one of the five natural refrigerants, which strongly contribute to the reduction of energy-consumption and significant reduction of the CO2 emissions. The paper evaluates the results of operation of this plant and is supported with technical details obtained mainly via remote monitoring and photos of the system in operation.

100% CO2 solutions for small and medium store formats, Sylvain Gillaux, SANDEN

This case study will examine how SANDEN has entered the European market with a unique range of CO2 inverter-type condensing units (both split-type and plug-in). The first installations were conducted in the past six months and the results will be presented. These products are tailored to the needs of retail industry players, especially for small and medium store formats.

A case study on ejector efficiency, Torben Funder-Kristensen, Danfoss

This case study will examine an existing installation in an Italian supermarket. In 2015, measurements on multi path ejectors versus EXV controlled CO2 systems for supermarkets were done in order to evaluate the feasibility of the ejectors. Encouraging results showing up to 30 % efficiency improvement were obtained during the summer months. The CO2 system was incorporating refrigeration and also air conditioning. The presentation will outline the results and also the perspectives in relation to the application of CO2 for refrigeration and integrated systems (i.e. Air con) in warmer climates.

Transcritical CO2 compressor for economized cycle, Giacomo Pisano, DORIN

This presentation shows the main characteristics of a compressor and its installation in a 50 kW air to water heat pump for high temperature water production, targeted for the replacement of old gas boilers of ambient heating systems with radiators as terminal units. The 50 kW heat pump is a case study developed in a European FP7 project, called NxtHPG - "Next Generation of Heat Pumps working with Natural fluids". The project team includes RTD (Research & Technical Development) and industrial partners, in total 13 partners. The heat pump has been tested by an Italian RTD partner in a climatic chamber at various ambient temperatures, so it is possible to show its performances, efficiency and energy savings in a wide range of operating conditions. The results of testing the single compressor and the ones performed on the complete heat pump unit are shown and discussed.

Compressor technology options supporting R744 system design for diverse end-user needs, Venugopal Kandi, Emerson Climate Technologies

The presentation will cover several field case studies including a convenience store in France, which has a cascade system installation with scroll/scroll design. R744 booster system architecture has gained a good acceptance in colder regions such as Northern and Central Europe. For warmer regions like Southern Europe, different system architectures like cascade systems, pumped R744 systems and also booster systems are possible system design options. One case study will present a cascade system with scroll compressor technologies for both medium- and low-temperature commercial refrigeration. Another one will focus on a booster system with semi-hermetic reciprocating and scroll compressor technologies.

Direct space heating and cooling in commercial buildings with refrigerant CO2, Sergio Girotto, enEX

This case study examines how until today, CO2 was used as a refrigerant in refrigeration only and had not been considered as a potential component in air conditioning or direct space heating. The presentation will show the untapped potential of this natural refrigerant and show results from two new large systems that were equipped with direct cooling and heating using CO2 at the end of 2015. In one case, a supermarket had the complete heating and cooling systems integrated with the refrigeration unit. In the second case, a supermarket had three large independent and reversible heat pump/air conditioners installed. Compared to using water as an intermediate medium, numerous advantages will be shown, including simplicity, a non-existent risk of corrosion with water, lower installation cost and significantly higher efficiency.

Marketing and green procurement tools for commercial plug-in refrigerators: The EU Horizon 2020 project „ProCold“, Eva Geilinger, ProCold

The focus of the case study will be on presenting the ProCold project and its services and tools for suppliers/procurers of plug-in commercial refrigeration equipment as well as their support for retailers, food and beverage companies, caterers etc. in their green procurement. ProCold is a European project in the framework of Horizon 2020, supporting the development and market penetration of energy efficient commercial refrigeration equipment using natural refrigerants. The project aims at stimulating both the supply and demand for environmentally friendly refrigerated plug-in cabinets. One of the examples studied is Switzerland, which has an active rebate programme, paying back 25% of the purchase price for efficient plug-in cabinets using natural refrigerants. Among the biggest winners of the programme are large retailers, who participate and follow the green procurement guidelines, which not only receive a refund, but also save in future electricity costs.
