The ATMOsphere Review Board has made its third round of selections for case studies to be presented at ATMOsphere Europe 2016, which will take place on 19 & 20 April in Barcelona, Spain.

Congratulations to Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, Panasonic, Alfa Laval, EPTA, Tecumseh Products Company, Tewis, Cooltech Applications and DENSO Europe who will present the following case studies during ATMOsphere Europe 2016.

The next generation of commercial CO2 refrigeration systems, Sascha Hellmann, Carrier Commercial Refrigeration

This case study focuses on real life examples of the next generation of commercial CO2 refrigeration systems in supermarkets. The presentation will showcase the results from an energy analysis and discuss the configurations of an optimal system for hot and cold ambient temperature.

CO2 refrigeration system for convenience stores in Europe, Hidekazu Tachibana, Panasonic

The case study will show operational results from Panasonic’s CO2 transcritical solutions for smaller stores. Efficiency and system analysis will show the differences and advantages compared to existing traditional systems. The presentation will show the main solutions and challenges encountered when using these CO2 systems to achieve high efficiency and reliability in the European market. Further cost reduction, product improvements and training of installers will be some of the key topics discussed.

HVAC integration building management with CO2 transcritical technology, Francesco Mastrapasqua, EPTA

The case study will examine the latest advancements in HVAC integration using CO2 transcritical technology in Europe. It will present an in-depth analysis of the energy efficiency, capital cost, payback, net present value and environmental benefits of using CO2 refrigeration for environmentally sustainable buildings. Extensive data will be presented to explain the reason for an increased usage of CO2 refrigeration systems via a comparison with a R404-refrigerated store.

Reach-in cabinets running with propane, Frédéric Guy, Tecumseh Products Company

In this case study, the efficiency of R290 will be compared to R404A. Following the F-Gas compliance, the thermodynamical refrigerant comparison will also take into account the design cost of the two components. The presentation will include laboratory test results of the compressor, reach-in test results for coefficient of performance (COP), the cooling capacity and system temperature, which all show the optimized design of the R290 system.

Supermarket with CO2 refrigerant and refrigeration-air conditioning integration, Javier Atencia, Tewis

The case study focuses on installations created in Spain by the ALDI supermarket chain. The facilities presented consist of efficient fully CO2-based solutions and introduces technological advances in thermodynamic cycle including latest technologies, solutions and systems developed by Tewis in the last years. Tewis has equiped over 500 supermarkets in Spain with Air conditioning – Refrigeration integration. This experience allows them to now face “all CO2” projects with a guarantee of success and supports their objectives in energy efficiency through control and monitoring in facilities integrating different systems.

MagFreeG Project: Accelerating the deployment of refrigerant gas alternatives thanks to European Union initiatives, Vincent Delecourt, Cooltech Applications

This case study will examine the replacement of HFCs with a green alternative, magnetic cooling. Granted by the European Commission, the MagFreeG project has been managed by Cooltech Applications since July 2014. It is part of the effort led by the EU to reach its objective to reduce at least 40% the greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The main goal of the project is to accelerate and support the deployment of innovative alternatives to HFCs in the HVAC&R sector. The talk will highlight how European market stakeholders (OEMs, end users) will benefit from the technology to find new areas of improvement and differentiation for their refrigeration systems. The presentation will also touch upon the commitment of large organizations, such as the European Commission or BPI (Public investment bank) in France to create an influential network, which fosters the innovation and the implementation of green alternatives to HFCs.

Energy-saving effect of ejector technology, Jennifer Yun, DENSO Europe

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce DENSO’s ejector development and the energy savings obtained from using an ejector in CO2 refrigerant cycle products. Last year, an ejector for CO2 cycle vending machines was introduced into the Japanese market. The application of CO2 refrigerant vending machine is a joint development with Fuji Electric for Coca Cola vending machines in Japan. DENSO developed an ejector for CO2 refrigerant cycle, whose uniqueness comes from a system using the ejector outlet temperature to realize stable cycle control, resulting in 25 % of energy saving in annual power consumption. A common problem when using the traditional refrigerant cycle with expansion valve is the loss of the energy generated by the refrigerant under high pressure during the expansion process. To recover this energy that is typically lost, DENSO developed the ejector. Today it uses two types of ejector cycle, EJECS I and EJECS II.

Abaticgo Drycooler & the concept Abaticgo CO2 gas cooler, Kari Salonen, Alfa Laval
