Paul Alway

A highly experienced refrigeration engineer with over 25 years experience in the industry covering manufacturing, consultancy, design and research. The last seven years have been spent working directly for retailers in the UK (Tesco, Marks and Spencer) implementing change programs for the roll out of Transcritical CO₂ systems, maintenance work on existing cascade and LPR CO₂ systems and major energy reduction programmes. Paul is now working as Design Director for AB Group to continue to build on their ongoing success in the use of natural refrigerants.

Antoine Azar

Antoine graduated from the University of Liège in Belgium, with a Master's degree in electro-mechanical & energy engineering. Antoine worked at the Coca-Cola Company for 16 years. Between July 2011 - December 2016 he held the position of global program director of Coca-Cola’s sustainable refrigeration program. Prior to that, Antoine performed as the maintenance manager and worked in various departments including engineering, design and innovation, quality control and telecommunication.

Mirko Bernabei

Mirko graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Padua with a Master’s degree in Refrigeration. Mirko joined SCM FRIGO at the end of 2001 as a Project Engineer. Since 2004 he has been engaged in the design and development of CO2 systems and since 2009 of NH3 systems. He currently holds the position of Technical Director and R&D Manager of the SCM Group.

Monika Biraitė-Juodvalkienė

Monika graduated from Vilnius University in Lithuania with a Master degree in International and EU law. Since 2006, she has been working in the Ministry of Environment. From July 2012, Monika has been acting as an Environment Attaché responsible for Climate Change issues. She is currently chairing the Council Working Party on Environment where the Fluorinated gases regulation proposed by the European Commission is being discussed and, accordingly, is leading the discussions with the European Parliament.

Juergen Brenneis

Juergen has started at Red Bull in March 2008 as Product Manager Retail within the Global Purchasing Department and since February 2013, Juergen is heading the Global Purchasing Team for Point of Sale Materials. He has implement the ECO Cooler strategy and has successfully driven the phase out of HFC refrigerants since 2008. In his position he is globally responsible for all technical and commercial aspects for the Red Bull Cooler fleet.

Olivier Campy

Olivier Campy has an Engineering Masters degree (Chemistry) and started his career in the heavy industry dealing with Corrosion & Surface Treatment. Olivier joined the SANDEN French operation in 1996 holding various positions in the field of automotive air-conditioning compressors manufacturing. He has held company management functions since 2005 and developed diversification programs emphasising the environment as the main business domain & value, in automotive but also household sectors. In addition to deploying these activities, Olivier is also part of the Global SANDEN team in charge of developing CO₂-refrigerant solutions for a wide range of applications in household & professional areas worldwide.

Marc Chasserot

Marc Chasserot is a specialist in natural refrigeration with over 15 years of experience in the HVAC&R sector, starting as the Marketing Manager for the Norsk Hydro business unit specialised in CO₂ transcritical refrigeration and heating. He worked closely with several Japanese manufacturers selling the market innovative "CO₂ Ecocute heatpumps".

In 2006 Marc founded the industry leading website for CO₂ cooling and heating experts worldwide, called www.R744.com. This was followed by three additional industry resources for hydrocarbons, water and ammonia (namely: www.hydrocarbons21.com, www.R718.com and www.ammonia21.com).

Marc is co-founder and CEO of shecco, an independent market development company specialised in bringing Natural Refrigerants 'faster to market', working with numerous companies worldwide. Marc has chaired and organised several international workshops bringing together leading policy and industry experts to discuss 'how to bring natural refrigerants' faster to market, known as 'ATMOsphere'. He is also an active member of ASHRAE.

Michel de Rooij

Michel is the creator of the Next Week Open process, meaning a full store remodeling in eight days, inventor of a totally prefabricated and self-contained cooling/freezing/heating machine room with integrated heat pump, operating on residual heat from the refrigeration system, ending the use of natural gas. He is the developer of Ahold's own refrigeration furniture designs and technology, making energy saving day covers, high energy efficient fans and energy efficient LED lighting proactively driven by the organization itself. He is the driving force behind processes and innovations concerning sustainability, product quality, energy use, environmental- and economic responsibilities.

Eric Delforge

Eric Delforge joined Mayekawa in 2004. Previously he worked for several screw compressor manufacturers managing European activities. At Mayekawa, he handles European sales in industrial refrigeration, gas processing, cryogenics, heat pumps and food processing. The main focus of his work consists of the integration of heating and cooling into smart energy and thermal storage solutions. He advocates natural refrigerant-based technology applications across all industrial markets. He represents Mayekawa in various market sector organizations, actively informing its members on Mayekawa product developments and innovative applications. He also acts as a consultant and business lead with Mayekawa's large global accounts.

Bas Eickhout

Eickhout studied Chemistry and Environmental Science at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and lives in Utrecht. Since 2000 he worked as a researcher at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving). He worked on several projects which had to do with international environmental problems, such as climate change, agriculature, land-use and biofuels. He co-authored the IPCC report on climate change which received the 2007 Nobel Peace Price.

He co-authored the GroenLinks election program for the European elections in 2004, 2009 and 2014, and the Dutch elections in 2010 and 2012.

Jean-Michel Fleury

As Assets Director for Carrefour group, Jean Michel Fleury carries out strategic projects. Among them, he is in charge of switching over current commercial refrigeration systems using synthetic gas to natural refrigerants. Moreover and according to the sustainable development policy of Carrefour, he leads the objectives regarding increasing energy savings for countries throughout the world where Carrefour operates.

Previously Jean Michel Fleury has been Asia Procurement Director, based 8 years in Shanghai, where he drove sourcing for Asian countries, performing international tenders, and seting up global agreements. Furthermore since sustainable development is at the heart of Carrefour’s strategy, he also tested and set up some new equipments and devices in China which have proven their reliability and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Torben Funder-Kristensen

Torben Funder-Kristensen has a Master degree in Engineering (physics) and he received his Ph.D. in 1994 from the Technical University of Denmark (laser processing). Since 1995, Torben has been with Danfoss in Denmark holding various positions from consultancy within materials science and manufacturing processing to product development of controls components. He has been the Vice President of Product Development and from 2011 the head of Public Industry Affairs for refrigeration and air conditioning controls. He is a member of several internal and external boards and working groups within the industry.

Andrew Gaved

Andrew Gaved has been RAC’s editor for the last six years, and has a background in trade magazines stretching back over 20 years. As editor, he has helped to bring the cooling industry supply chain together to discuss the important topics ranging from European legislation to trends in supermarkets, to changes in technology – including natural refrigerants, holding the first international conference on Cooling with Carbon Dioxide back in 2007.

The magazine has long been an advocate of environmentally advanced technology, with its Cooling Industry Awards annually recognising the leading green innovations, services and companies.

Sylvain Gillaux

After working within the automotive division, Sylvain has been involved for the past 7 years in the diversification programme at SANDEN Europe in France. He first coordinated the diversification project team at SANDEN Manufacturing Europe, then established the Advanced Product Management department before starting his current position. Since the recent creation of SANDEN Environmental Solutions branch, Sylvain is responsible for business development in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Sylvain holds a double French-German degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, and a Master of Science from Arts et Métiers ParisTech.

Sergio Girotto

Sergio Girotto graduated from Padova University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 2004 he founded Enex srl, a company specialising in refrigeration and heat pump systems based on natural refrigerants. Before this, he worked in the field of commercial refrigeration for almost 20 years, covering various technical roles including design, research and development as well as manufacturing.

Amad Hafez

Amad Hafez started at SONAE MC in 2012, in the department of equipment and construction, taking responsibility for the management of the cooling projects for both new stores and re-builds. He has been applying and constantly looking for new solutions in the area of commercial refrigeration by making the stores more sustainable both energetically and environmentally.

He is a graduate in Electrotechnical engineering from the Institute of Engineering of Lisbon, Portugal (ISEL), and holds a master's degree in Mechanical engineering with specialty in power, HVAC and refrigeration. Previously, Amad worked at Arneg Portugal where he was responsible for the department of technical assistance and projects.

Torben M. Hansen

Torben M. Hansen has worked with refrigeration during his entire professional career. Among the merits is an ASHRAE research project as well as more than 30 published international papers on refrigeration and former CDIG board membership. He is the Director and Cofounder of ADVANSOR A/S, a manufacturer of CO₂ refrigeration and heat pump technology. Since November 2011, Advansor was acquired by Hill Phoenix (US) and Torben Hansen is thrilled with the new commitments in making CO₂ a global commercial technology.

Christian Heerup

Christian holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering supplemented by 30 years’ experience within refrigeration, including solutions for supermarkets, cold stores, heat recovery and air conditioning systems with focus on natural refrigerants CO₂ and hydrocarbons.

Christian has initiated several projects aiming at reducing climate impact and optimizing energy performance and he share his discoveries when delivering training courses in CO₂ refrigeration.

Megan Hellstedt

Megan is the Vice President of Sustainability for Delhaize Group, a Belgian-based international food retailer present in eleven countries on three continents with over 22 billion Euros annual revenue and 158,000 employees. She is responsible for driving the Group’s 2020 Sustainability strategy forward, working with partners across the company to embed sustainability into their work. With a small team of sustainability experts, she supports DG’s work to create more sustainable products, eliminate waste, support healthy lifestyles, foster a diversity that reflects DG’s values and communities, and maintain strong sustainable practices across the business.

Megan started with the company in 2006 working on environmental management and sustainability strategy at one of Delhaize Group’s subsidiaries (Hannaford Bros. Co. based in Scarborough, Maine), then joined the Group level in 2009. Prior to Hannaford, Megan worked in the land conservation field for public agencies, non-profit organizations and as a private consultant. She holds a Masters in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a BA in Earth and Environmental Science from Wesleyan University, both in the U.S. She is now based in Brussels, Belgium.

Kent Hofmann

Kent is an experienced engineer with over 30 years service in the HVAC and refrigeration industry covering consultancy, subcontracting, wholesale and manufacturing, with a special interest in energy efficiency and natural refrigerants. He has experience in systems using ammonia, propane, water and carbon dioxide and how to integrate these in supermarkets, industry and other commercial buildings. He joined the sales team at Green & Cool in mid 2010 to sell and promote trans-critical CO₂ systems in Europe.

Luc Jacquet

Luc Jacquet graduated from Louvain-la-Neuve University in Belgium with a Master degree in Telecom. Luc is in charge of marketing and business development. Luc acquired his entrepreneurial experience in a first growth company. He went on to succeed in growing the company before selling it on to an industrial group.

Thierry Jomard

Thierry Jomard holds a PhD in Heat Transfer from Lyon National Institute for Applied Sciences. He joined Carrier in 1993, where he has worked in the field of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. After leading the Carrier Commercial Refrigeration engineering efforts from 2005 to 2009, which resulted in the launch of the Carrier CO₂ transcritical system for stationary refrigeration, he moved to Aubagne (southern France) to manage the factory producing Mechanical systems for Carrier in Europe and the Middle East. This Carrier factory delivers all CO₂ transcritical racks sold by Carrier throughout the world.

Samuel Just

Since 2010, Samuel has been a policy adviser in the general directorate for risk prevention of the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy. In particular, he has been responsible for the implementation and negotiation in France of the FGas regulation and the national regulation that applies to halogenated hydrocarbon based refrigerants.

Previously, he worked for 7 years in the field of legal metrology where he was involved, when working for the national authorities, in setting up the French automated traffic control, before joining the headquarter of the International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML) to follow up the implementation of the European directive 2004/22/EC and ensure its compatibility with OIML normative documents and to negotiate the review of the existing cooperation agreement between the OIML and ISO.

Jens Kallesoe

Jens Kallesoe graduated from the Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering, with the bachelor thesis “Optimizing an Industrial Ammonia System”. He joined Advansor A/S in May 2011 as a Project Engineer and has, during the past years, gained comprehensive experience in the engineering of CO₂ transcritical solutions for both industrial and retail segments. In 2012, he was appointed Nordic Sales Manager with responsibility for sales and project development in Scandinavia.

Sylvain Lamy

Born in Paris, Sylvain Lamy studied for his first degree in Thermodynamics and Energy in Poitiers and then went on to post graduate studies in Marketing and International Business at the University of Bordeaux. For the last 18 years, Sylvain has held a variety of marketing and product management positions in the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry and in different countries including France, Canada, USA, Italy, Belgium and now Germany.

Since 2003 Sylvain has been part of Emerson Climate Technologies European Marketing Team based in Aachen, Germany. Today he is Marketing Manager for Refrigeration Compressors, developing Emerson Climate’s compressor portfolio for standard and natural refrigerants.

A key focus for Sylvain in recent years has been the development and launch of CO₂ compressor products (including Copeland Scroll and Stream Semi-Hermetic compressors with on-board electronics for advanced protection and diagnostics). He works closely with OEMs and end-users to support Emerson Climate Technologies’ commitment and vision to provide new technologies and solutions that help retailers in their efforts to adopt natural refrigerants.

Jo Leinen

Leinen has been a member of the European Parliament for the Socialist Group since 1999. Prior to that, he was a member of the Committee of the Regions and the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities from 1995 to 1999. From 1985 to 1994, he served as the Minister for Environment in Saarland, Germany. Leinen was the Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety from 2009 to 2012.

Leinen studied Law and Economics in Saarbrücken and Bonn. He holds a Law degree and a Certificate of Advanced European Studies from the College of Europe. In 1985, Leinen was awarded the German Environment Foundation Prize.

Sébastien Lemoine

Sébastien Lemoine is the Director of Product & Sustainability for Carrier Transicold Truck Trailer Europe, Middle East, Africa & Russia. He is in charge of product management & strategies, sustainability & regulations, as well as AdvanTE3C transport. AdvanTE3C Transport is a group of experts that combines existing technologies & products in an innovative fashion in order to satisfy emerging customer needs with a sustainable approach.

During Sébastien's 15 years within Carrier Transicold, he has held several increasing roles in Product & Program Management.

Stig-Göran Lind

Stig-Göran Lind has 30 years experience in the refrigeration sector, as an entrepreneur and the last ten years as a manufacturer of transcritical CO₂ units. Stig-Göran Lind is a co-founder of Green & Cool, a company that, today, is a part of UTC and is a global supplier of units for both grocery and industrial applications.

With industrial production, unique control systems and a wide range of models, Green & Cool is today ready to deliver and meet the increased interest globally.

Diego Malimpensa

After graduating with a degree in Engineering from Padua University, Diego Malimpensa joined CAREL in 2006 working as a Product Manager for food retail refrigeration field controllers. He is now in charge of the business management of the “CAREL retail sistema” portfolio, coordinating the deployment of CAREL's solution for food retail systems. As a marketer, he is directly involved in product design and the development of emerging technologies. During the last few years, he has been focusing on CO₂ solutions and BLDC compressors applied in commercial refrigeration.

Alexandra Maratou

Environmental and energy issues are the drive and focus in what Alexandra Maratou does. After studying Environmental and Resource Economics at University College London, Alexandra was a research assistant at the Electricity Policy Research Group at the University of Cambridge, UK. Following that, she worked as an intern at Cabinet Dimas, Commissioner for the Environment at the European Commission before joining shecco, where she acts today as the Deputy Public Affairs Manager. 

Nina Masson

Nina has been working with shecco for 11 years in various roles, including Deputy Managing Director shecco SPRL and Chief Market Development Officer shecco group. Today, as Chief Strategy Advisor for Special Projects, she is responsible for EU and UN projects for natural refrigerants and sustainable HVAC&R solutions. She holds two Masters’ degrees in Business Management and in Environmental Management. Nina has been the lead author on various publications. She serves as an independent expert for UN and EU agencies on policy analysis, capacity building, renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Joachim Maul

Joachim has studied mechanical engineering, specialized in fluid- and thermodynamics. He received his Ph.D in 1994 with a thesis on the behavior of chemical reactions on the surface of ceramic tiles during the re-entry of a capsule.

Starting after university as a R&D Manager for volume flow measurement techniques, his life with refrigerant circuits begins in 2000 with Rittal, where he was responsible from technical side for cabinet coolers and heaters. During that time he developed cabinet air conditioners with CO₂ as a refrigerant. At the beginning of 2010 he joined Alpha-Innotec (now called ait-deutschland) as the Director R&D. In the last few years one of his important projects was the successful development and market introduction of a new generation of R290 heat pumps. Several patents and publications are a result of his work in different areas. Furthermore, Joachim is a member of several associations and different working groups especially for heat pumps.

Franziska Menten

Franziska has 10+ years of work experience in marketing, sales and events and over five years of professional experience in the field of climate-friendly technologies with a concentration in natural refrigerants. Together with shecco, she co-founded beatPlus GmbH, a German-based creative agency for branding & design, digital solutions and events for green projects. Franziska holds a Master’s degree in Business and Economics from Humboldt University in Berlin and a degree in Management from Bordeaux Business School.

Andreas Nolte

Andreas Nolte has been active in Nolte aktiv-markt GmbH, a company which owns several supermarkets operating under the EDEKA brand, since 1993. He assumed the role of Managing Director in 1995 and is responsibe for the areas of Finance, Electronic data processing and Procurement. With the building of the new store in Königstein, Andreas also assumed responsibility for Sustainable development at Nolte aktiv-markt GmbH. The first big project is the implementation of a CO₂ system at the Königstein store.

Thore Oltersdorf

Thore Oltersdorf studied process engineering at Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and graduated in 2004. After dedicating himself in development cooperation and policy education he started working at Fraunhofer ISE in 2006. He is a member of Group "Heat Pumps" since 2009.

His working experiences are related to executing and managing public and industrial-driven projects for vapor compression cycles (component/system development) and absorption heat pumps (esp. monitoring).

His research led to several ongoing patent filings / granted patents and publications related to evaporators, combination of heat sources for heat pumps, charge reduction and safety concepts for hydrocarbons as refrigerant. Currently the FP7 project "GreenHP" and the commissioning of ISE's new heat transformation center "Q-Trafo" absorbs lots of resources but quickens also the component development and new project activities.

Georgios Patkos

Mr. Patkos worked as Delhaize's Director of the Technical Department until the end of July 2015. In this role, he was in charge of all the new constructions projects, remodelings and maintenance of all the stores and warehouses in Belgium and Luxembourg. He was appointed as the Contract Manager at Delhaize in November 2005. His primary responsibility was to streamline all existing maintenance and service contracts in all EU banners.

Before joining Delhaize Group, he worked for Johnson Controls, as a global market leader in automotive systems and in facility management and control as a Refrigeration Manager. In that position, he took care of the account management for, among others, Delhaize, Carrefour, Cora and Shell. Before that, he was CEO of Schatten for several years until the merge with Johnsons Controls in 2002.

He studied refrigeration in Greece, where he was born, and also at the Institut of Arts et Métiers in Brussels. Mr. Patkos followed a management course at the Solvay Business School and has been Vice President of the “Union Belge des Frigoristes” for many years.

Andy Pearson

Andy Pearson graduated from Strathclyde University with bachelors degrees in Engineering and Manufacturing Science in 1986, and returned there to complete a PhD thesis on the use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant in 2005.

Dr Pearson is the President of the Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) for the period 2010 - 2013. He served a six-year term as a Director of the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) and recently edited the guide book “Ammonia as a refrigerant” and the soon-to-be-published "Carbon Dioxide as a refrigerant" on behalf of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR). He currently serves as a member of the refrigeration safety committees of the British Standards Institute, the European Standards Commission and the International Standards Organisation. He is a lead author for the United Nations Environment Program’s Refrigerant Technical Options Committee.

Clare Perry

Clare Perry has worked with the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) since 1998. As a climate campaign leader, she currently leads EIA’s climate campaign, which aims to reduce emissions of fluorinated gases and improve enforcement of multilateral environmental agreements designed to curb trade in harmful chemicals. She has attended meetings of the Montreal Protocol since 2007, was closely involved in the revision of the EU F-Gas Regulation, and advocates the use of climate-friendly alternatives to HFCs in multiple fora. Clare graduated from the University of Southampton in 1993 with a BSc in biology and subsequently gained a Masters degree in coastal zone management.

Reinhold Resch

Dipl. Ing. Reinhold Resch is the Head of Research and Development at AHT Cooling Systems GmbH located in Rottenmann, Austria. He studied Industrial Engineering at the Technical University of Graz, in Austria. In 1987 he worked as an R&D engineer at KNAPP Logistics for approximately 5 years. Reinhold began his career at AHT in 1993.

Mathias Safarik

Mr. Safarik studied chemical engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Köthen, Germany. He then worked on R&D projects in the field of solar thermally driven air-conditioning and heat storage using phase change materials. He received a PhD from the Technical University Magdeburg in 2003.

Since 2002, he has been working at the Institute of Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK Dresden) with the main focus on absorption refrigeration technology. Mr. Safarik was involved in several developments of innovative thermally driven chillers with different working fluids. The latest development in this field is a directly air-cooled water/lithium bromide absorption chiller.

Since 2012, Mr. Safarik has been managing the Department of Applied Energy Engineering of ILK Dresden with the main technological fields: water as refrigerant in compression systems, absorption refrigeration technology, water desalination and complex energy systems.
 

Jonas Schoenenberger

Jonas Schoenenberger is working for Frigo-Consulting, a Swiss engineering company mainly active in the fields of retail- and industrial refrigeration, with a focus on energy efficient and sustainable refrigerating systems. Over the past years, he has gained comprehensive experience in engineering efficient and sustainable solutions with natural refrigerants, and has been involved in the design and implementation of several sub- and transcritical CO₂ systems. Since 2012, he has been in charge of research and development activities at Frigo-Consulting, and committed to developing and pushing innovative technologies. Jonas Schoenenberger gained a Bachelor degree in system engineering in 2009 and has previously worked as a Mechanical Engineer.

Lothar Serwas

Lothar Serwas started his professional life with an apprenticeship as Instrument Mechanic. After completion his studies he joined the former Linde Kältetechnik – later acquired by Carrier Corporation - in 1995 working as Application Engineer in the field of commercial refrigeration in the international sales department and has come in touch with many types of different food retail applications.

After having taken over different management positions in the areas of project engineering and sales he has been appointed as Manager CO₂OLtec Sales focussing on transcritical CO₂ turnkey solutions for all types of Food Retail shop formats.

Mads Sigsgaard

Mads joined DSI in 2006 as a Regional Sales Manager. He graduated as a Marine Engineer in Aalborg. Mads has worked as Chief Engineer aboard Greenlandic Shrimp trawlers fishing in the North Atlantic areas, at Carnitech, supplier of equipment for the food industry, first as an engineer assisting customers commissioning process systems on fishing vessels, later seconded from Carnitech to Thailand as the Service and Engineering manager for Aquastar, commissioning a big Shrimp Factory, and also as the manager of a Sales and Technical department.

At DSI Mads is responsible for sales of Plate Freezers to South- and Central America, Asia, Oceania and some European countries. Customers are mainly Refrigeration companies with End-users in the food industry.

John Skelton

John Skelton joined Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Limited as an apprentice in 1984. He has spent his career in retail refrigeration working for and on behalf of various UK food retailers. He has been instrumental in reducing Sainsbury’s carbon footprint and the step change to CO2 refrigeration. John has delivered CO₂ in over 160 stores and continues to champion the switch to natural refrigerant solutions.

John Skelton is currently Chairman of the British Retail Refrigeration Association End User Group and sits on both the Institute of Refrigeration’s Executive Council and its Technical Committee. 

Robert Sossi

Since 2011, Robert Sossi has been the Technical Manager at MAYEKAWA GERMANY, where he is responsible for technical and sales support in the DACH area. Prior to that, he worked at KTI-Plersch Kältetechnik GmbH Unterbalzheim as the Project Manager for Chillers & Flake ice plants and the Leader in the Internal Sales Department. Robert holds a graduate engineering degree in Food Technology. The title of his thesis was “Performance test on a brewery brine cooling system / comparison to direct NH₃ expansion.”

Maarten ten Houten

In 2011 Maarten joined Heineken as Sustainability Manager Global Marketing, globally responsible for all brands on 5 work streams in Heineken’s “Brewing a Better Future” Program: green marketing & activation, green packaging, green cooling, green distribution, and carbon footprint modelling.

Before joining Heineken Maarten worked for 11 years in various sustainability roles in Philips Electronics (2001-2011). Maarten started working in sustainability for several consulting firms in 1992.

Bente Tranholm-Schwarz

Since 2010 Bente Tranholm Schwarz is deputy Head of Unit in DG Climate Action in the European Commission responsible for, inter alia, protecting the ozone layer and the climate system against adverse effects of ozone depleting substances and fluorinated gases.

From 2004 to 2009 she was in charge of State aid policy development in DG Competition where she also worked as a national expert between 1996 and 1999. Before she joined the European Commission she worked for the Danish Ministry of Economics and Business Affairs.

She began her career in 1994 and from 1999-2001 she was the Assistant to the State Secretary. Between 2001 and 2004 she was posted as Industry and Maritime Counsellor at the Danish Permanent Representation to the European Union.

Menno Van der Hoff

Since April 2014, Menno is leading the development of the TripleAqua Heat Pump at Uniechemie (NL) and he is responsible for the design and technology of this HVAC heat pump climate control system. By applying active and passive thermal storage, natural refrigerants and optimized transfer of energy, a zero carbon footprint sustainable solution was created. Prior to that, he was the EU International Product Manager HVAC at Colt International Ltd, UK.

Menno has patented several designs, such as Apparatus and Method for Influencing the temperature in a Building (2013). In 2009, he received The Cooling Industry Award 2009 UK and the H&V News Award 2009 UK Environmental initiative of the year. He was also awarded the NVKL Koeltrofee (Cool Trophy) 2010-2011 at VSK Utrecht, NL for a propylene decentral cascade heat pump system. Through his original work, he has achieved results reducing the GHG emissions directly and indirectly from HVAC systems. He strives to build new and innovative business without the use of ozone depleting chemicals and synthetic refrigerants.

Andrea Voigt

Andrea Voigt was appointed Director General of EPEE, the voice of the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump industry in Europe, in 2009. Headquartered in Brussels, EPEE currently represents 48 companies as well as national and international associations from Europe, Asia and North America.

Under Voigt’s leadership, EPEE has become one of the leading associations of the HVACR sector on a global level. EPEE is a member / supporter of major European and international initiatives such as the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), ICARHMA (International Council of Air-conditioning, Refrigeration, Heating Manufacturers Associations) and the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR). It is also partnering with UN Environment on several projects.

Voigt’s experience in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry spans over two decades. She is a member of ASHRAE, the German engineers’ society DKV and a Board member of the EU Coalition for Energy Savings, a leading cross-sectoral association advocating for a stronger focus on energy efficiency in the EU. A German national, she is fluent in English and French, holding degrees in public administration (MPA), applied linguistic science (MA) and marketing.

Fionnuala Walravens

Fionnuala is a consultant for EIA’s climate team. She first joined EIA in 2007. During her time there she developed EIA’s pioneering supermarket refrigeration campaign-Chilling Facts, which helped kick start a global shift towards natural refrigerants. She also led an investigation into illegal trade in E-waste leaving the UK destined for West Africa. Her areas of focus have included; the Montreal Protocol, the EU F-gas regulation, illegal trade in ODS and F-gases and removing HFC-23 from carbon trading schemes.

After leaving school with a European Baccalaureate she studied Anthropology at University College London where she graduated with a B.Sc (hons) and has a Masters of Research in Primatology from Roehampton University, London.
