The two-day UNIDO ATMOsphere Technology Summit brought together 150 representatives from developing and developed countries to explore the possibilities of leapfrogging high global warming substances in the HVAC&R and foam sectors. The event highlighted successful initiatives worldwide, the importance of knowledge sharing, and the proactive involvement of national governments to create more incentives for the uptake of new technologies to replace HCFCs.

"As an UN agency we have be technology neutral, but I also strongly believe that it is our duty and mandate to promote new technologies for the benefit of the developing countries," said Sidi Menad Si Ahmed, Director of the Montreal Protocol Branch, UNIDO, who introduced the underlying rationale for organising the Technology Summit on 3 June.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), together with market development company shecco, had invited decision makers from developing countries to actively discuss the technical, commercial and social viability of natural refrigerants and foams at the two-day event, "an initiative that we as an UN agency believe will help leapfrog the phase out of HCFC because as we all know one of the main concerns of the international community is also to avoid phasing in substances that have a high global warming potential and that is something that we all have to take on board”, stressed Mr. Si Ahmed.
