Carrier, one of the world’s largest providers of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions, again demonstrates its commitment to improving the world around us through engineered innovation and environmental stewardship by supporting ATMOsphere Europe 2015 as the Platinum Sponsor. The event, which takes place from 16 – 17 March in Brussels, discusses the latest updates and developments in the field of natural refrigerants.

Founded by the inventor of modern air conditioning, Carrier has developed into a globally leading provider of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions for the residential, commercial, retail, transport and food service sectors. Carrier is part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp., a leading provider to the aerospace and building systems industries.

CO2 – keeping commercial refrigeration innovative

Carrier first began research and development into CO2 technology for broad refrigeration applications in the mid-1990s. Since then, the company has developed breakthrough technologies for advanced manufacturing processes, new and patented components and new materials to make CO2 a viable refrigerant. Carrier’s first transcritical CO2 refrigeration system was installed in a Swiss hypermarket in 2004. After an intense trial phase, the technology was launched in 2009 as the CO2OLtec® refrigeration system. With over 800 CO2OLtec® systems installed already, this system is used in hundreds of European super- and hypermarkets. Carrier’s CO2OLtech Integral solutions, which leverage the waste heat from the refrigeration system to heat the building and its sanitary water, enable a store to save up to 35% in energy costs.

Shipping made easy with CO2

Beyond retail applications, Carrier Transicold has developed CO2 refrigerant container technology, NaturaLINE® for the marine transport refrigeration industry. The unit, which was first announced in 2010, is used to transport perishable, chilled and frozen goods such as bananas, cookie dough, ice cream, meat and cheese. The NaturaLINE® technology won International Freighting Weekly’s 2011 Innovation Award – New Products in 2011. That same year, Carrier displayed a new concept unit for over-the-road trailer refrigeration using CO2. Committed to further promoting sustainability and innovation, the company continues to invest in further research and development into CO2 technologies.
