Industrial Refrigeration Panel |
Steve Jackson explained that industrial refrigeration contractors can install more efficient systems by being smarter with the design. Rules of thumb no longer apply.

Michael Lynch talked about the history of US Cold Storage and ammonia/CO2. He discussed details of how these systems have helped reduce ammonia inventory and shared lessons learned in more than 10 years of operating ammonia/co2 systems.

Gerard Von Dohlen talked about the performance of different refrigerants in a typical refrigerated warehouse application, highlighting that there isn’t a huge performance difference between the main refrigerant options.

Peter Lepschat said that using ‘rules of thumb’ is no longer an efficient way to design industrial refrigeration systems. A thorough engineering design will lead to a more efficient system with a smaller ammonia charge.

Training Panel |
André Patenaude from Emerson talked about their extensive training program in the U.S. and Canada to familiarize technicians with natural refrigerants (especially CO2 and its high pressure) and explain all the safety requirements. Emerson have organised more than 65 training courses in the U.S. alone and they plan for more in 2017/2018.

Johari Gregorio from embraco shed light on the Brazilian compressor manufacturer’s training programs for OEMs on R290. Alongside cooperation with universities, embraco runs R&D labs around the world at which it spreads knowledge and expertise on converting cabinets to R290.

Natural refrigerants training is not mandatory in the U.S. and many companies see this as a problem, according to the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, one of the world's leading education, training and certification associations for the HVAC&R industry. RSES’s Art Miller argued that with all the recent EPA-approved applications for the use of hydrocarbons in the U.S., the market has nowhere to go but up,
