In 2014 Mayekawa, which has a 40% market share of the industrial refrigeration compressor market, celebrated its 90th anniversary. Kuniaki Kawamura, Mayekawa Manufacturing's Executive Director, reviewed the company’s long history in manufacturing industrial refrigeration compressors using natural refrigerants. In a product overview, Mr. Kawamura described Mayekewa's variety of technologies using the five natural refrigerants that can reach temperatures of between -100°C and 120°C, including the NewTon package, utilising NH3/CO2 in the cold store and fishing sector; and the PascalAir, using air-cycle refrigeration for low-temperature applications ranging in temperature from -50°C to -100°C.

According to shecco's Masson, in the commercial refrigeration sector, end users worldwide have started to adopt natural refrigerants on a large scale. Worldwide there are over 3080 CO2 transcritical supermarkets and over 2020 CO2 cascade/secondary supermarkets. In Europe the number of transcritical CO2 stores has more than doubled since shecco’s first market survey in 2012. Natural refrigerant solutions are also becoming increasingly available in North America, a region considered to have a high potential to become a world leader in natural refrigerant technology.

Uto from Lawson announced that with the support of the Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the retailer is opening the first pilot CO2 transcritical store in Peta Barat in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 7 February. This store will provide the retailer with a lot of useful experience and data on energy consumption of CO2 systems in tropical climates. Uto pointed out that the introduction of CO2 in warmer climates by Lawson and other retailers could provide a double-dividend, bringing the costs down while being friendly to the environment at the same time.

Hiroaki Suzuki, AEON's Manager of Sustainability, described the retailer's public commitment to install natural refrigerants in November 2011. With around 598 stores in Japan, AEON has a sustainability principle based on four priorities, one of which is to contribute to a low carbon society. Since the company decided to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1.84 million tons in 2008, it began to introduce natural refrigerants (CO2) in all new stores, while converting an existing 3,500 stores to CO2. A large-scale installation can be found at the AEON mall Makuhari Shintoshin, opened in December 2013.

Sobeys Inc. is the leading Canadian grocery retailer in using natural refrigerant systems across its store network. Ian Crookston, Manager of Energy Management for Sobeys Inc., attributes this success to strong leadership commitment, supplier availability and qualified installation / maintenance vendors. Crookston commented that one of the important factors in rolling-out TC stores in Québec was the fact that the installations were made in a market where government incentives were available. Sobeys currently has 65 systems located around Canada, and in 2014, the retailer is committed to adding another 6 TC CO2 systems.

Technology case studies - Commercial Refrigeration |
This presentation focused on performance data relating to the energy efficiency of CO2 commercial refrigeration systems in convenience stores and supermarkets. A total of 450 CO2 units have been installed throughout Japan in 145 locations. Presenter Gaku Shimada, an advisor within the Corporate Planning Group of the Air-Conditioner Division within Panasonic Corporation, showed data monitored throughout the year, proving that key technology and product structure can achieve remarkable efficiency results. This presentation also addressed obstacles such as cost and training, and discussed the future of CO2 in commercial refrigeration.
