Introduction and State of The Industry |
North America has the potential to transform the industry globally, if it takes a leadership role, emphasizes Nina Masson, Head of Market Research at shecco, in her presentation given at the ATMOsphere America 2013. Although the current natural refrigerant use in North America is still low in most end-use applications, compared to other world regions, several companies are actively working on introducing and advancing the natural refrigerant technology market.

While the benefits of transrictial CO2 systems are well accepted by several supermarket chains, Marc-André Lesmerises, President of Carnot Refrigeration, in his presentation looks at other types of applications that could benefit from CO2 technology. The focus of the presentation is a retrofit project by Carnot Refrigeration during which a new CO2 refrigeration system in a complex of 3 Ice Rinks was installed. Mr Lesmerises concludes that the Ice Rink projects are actually at parity with HFC technologies when the heat reclaim capability is included in the initial costs.

The presentation by Scott Martin, Director for Sustainable Technologies for the Refrigeration Systems Devision of Hillphoenix discussed CO2 based supermarket refrigeration systems in North America. Currently 3 types of commercial refrigeration systems are manufactured, produced and used in the North America, namely, pumped CO2 secondary systems, cascade CO2 systems, transcritical CO2 HFC-free booster systems.

Mark Tomooka, Engineering Manager from Mayekawa USA, provides an interesting review of ammonia supermarket systems, identifying success factors as well as sharing the lessons learned from Mayekawa’s experience. Although CO2 is often the preferred refrigerant for commercial applications, Mayekawa’s experience with the CO2/ammonia store in Carpinteria proves that the interest in ammonia systems is increasing due to its compact construction, market price and energy efficiency.

An extensive overview of the state of the natural refrigerant industry in North America is presented by Masoon Ali from Heatcraft Worldwide Refrigeration. Natural refrigerants have an energy efficiency advantage and with regulatory standards introduced the market is maturing. The lack of economies of scope and scale is one of the obstacles in commercialisation of natural refrigerants, however, the supplier base is increasing and the costs are coming down, emphasizes Mr Ali in his presentation.
