News

30 April 2014 | The EPA and HFCsBack in the summer of 2013, an event called Atmospheres America took place in Washington, D.C. It was put on by advocates of so-called natural refrigerants like ammonia, CO2, and hydrocarbons (HCs). While the approach focused mainly on the business sense of using those refrigerants, there were references to the possibility of a phaseout – or at the least, a phasedown – of synthetic hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
30 October 2013 | MICROGROOVE SUCCESSES SPUR NEW RESEARCHAs a result of changes in the market, research was initiated into MicroGroove smaller diameter inner grooved copper tubes. Many hurdles were overcome in bringing new products to market. Ultimately, the technology has been proven and is now widely employed in the mass production of air conditioners.
10 September 2013 | Supermarket Talk Turns NaturalIn supermarket refrigeration, much of the refrigerant talk is on the so-called ‘naturals.’ And among the naturals, one of the most talked about is R-744 (CO2). And when talking about ways to use it, the most often discussed approach is in transcritical applications. That thought process formed the basis for a supermarket end-user panel discussion this summer in Washington, D.C., at the second Atmosphere America Natural Refrigerants Conference. Participants came from Dehaize America (which owns the Food Lion chain), Sobeys, Sprouts, SuperValu, and Whole Foods, amongst others.
22 August 2013 | Low-charge ammonia can be competitiveCan carbon dioxide and ammonia work together? Apparently so, according to Mark Tomooka of Mayekawa in the US.

In his conference presentation, Tomooka described the company’s NH3/C02 solutions for the supermarket industry, in which ammonia charge is kept below 250 pounds.

One system was installed in a SuperValue store in the town of Carpinteria in California in 2012 that is described as the first “all natural” supermarket in the US.

Tomooka said the Carpinteria project proved a low-charge ammonia system can be competitive with other systems.

"This store is seeing efficiency gains of 13 to 30 per cent,” he said.

He said there are signs the market for natural refrigerants in the US is maturing.
These signs include the development of standards such as the Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) approval for C02 transcritical compressors and a pending update to ASHRAE standard 15, which will include C02 transcritical options.

CIMCO Refrigeration presented a case study demonstrating a successful ammonia/CO2 refrigeration system deployment at Canadawide, one of the country’s largest distributors of fruit and vegetables.

The system has saved Canadawide nearly 20 per cent in maintenance costs, with even more significant reductions in operating costs.

Danfoss vice president of public affairs, Robert Wilkins, said no single refrigerant is suitable for all applications.
