Technology Case Study Session 1 |
This case study highlights how a new CO2 refrigeration system from Carnot helped Sobeys Quebec to achieve a 22% reduction in refrigeration energy consumption for its IGA Extra Supermarket in Cap-de-la-Madeleine. This new system uses captured CO2 gas for water heating purposes without the need for a heat exchanger or pumping system.

Merle Rocke from EcoThermics, together with Darin Massner from Country Maid, presents a pioneering project between EcoThermics and Country Maid, utilising a transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) dedicated heat recovery system. The presentation compares the study of a prototype CO2 hydronic heat pump for space air conditioning in a commercial/industrial food production facility with traditional methods and outlines the lucrative market possibilities of CO2 heat pump technologies.

Regulatory Issues & Standards |
Cindy Newberg from the US Environmental Protection Agency starts the presentation by providing a regulatory update on HCFC Phaseout regulations and labelling requirements that will as of 2015 apply to all products in the US market containing HCFCs. Thereafter she mentions the proposed exemption to the `no venting` prohibition for hydrocarbons in domestic and retail stand-alone units. The agency is also continuously evaluating substitute alternatives under the Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) Program and has currently 15-20 active submissions under review that include fluorinated and non-fluorinated alternatives as well as new molecules. Ms Newberg concluded by saying that the US approach combines several elements, including robust licencing system, prohibitions on certain uses, refrigerant management, alternative identification and collaboration with partners.
