Armin Hafner - Italian supermarkets: R744 multi-ejector enhanced parallel compression system

Armin Hafner from SINTEF outlined the testing of the innovative multi-ejector enhanced parallel compression system in two supermarkets (Trondheim and Italy). With two liquid ejectors and four vapour ejectors and a very wide range of capacity controls, Hafner argued technology like this was not only pushing the CO2 equator south, but making it disappear, particularly as ejector technology starts to flood the market.

Antoine Azar, Global Program Director of The Coca-Cola Company, presented Refrigerants, Naturally! initiative's achievement:  Putting in place over 3.5 million HFC-free refrigeration units worldwide. The company has currently 1.4 million HFC free units, representing an improvement of 20% compared to 2013. Among those models, 230 are employing CO2, which are perfectly designed for bigger cooling equipment and 78% more energy efficient than HFC versions. For very small applications Coca-Cola has developed the thermoelectric cooler.

Active in 166 countries, Red Bull’s cooler fleet is 1,000,000 units. More than 50% of those units are using R600 already. In his presentation, Red Bull’s Global Purchasing Manager Juergen Brenneis compared the results obtained at three different temperatures ranges using R600a over R134a. He also highlighted the difficulties of getting HC compressors in Japan.

Jean Michel Fleury, Director International Support, Carrefour, discussed the retailer’s commitments to reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption, including moving toward HFC-free technologies. Fleury highlighted the strides made in CO2 commercial refrigeration, presenting a pilot case in Spain using parallel compression, which achieved a 1.2-year ROI thanks to reduced electricity consumption and lower maintenance costs.
