Sébastien Lemoine - Efficient road transport refrigeration unit using CO2

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

In his presentation, Sébastien Lemoine, Director of Product & Sustainability for Carrier Transicold Truck Trailer EMEA, outlines Carrier Transicold's choice for CO2 as refrigerant for transport refrigeration appications. CO2 as refrigerant in Container and Road Transport refrigeration reduces the total cost of ownership by increasing efficiency at the same life cycle cost compared to HFC refrigerants.

Menno Van der Hoff - De-central and central heat pumps for buildings

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

As Europe moves toward low-carbon and low-energy buildings, sustainable energy sources must be used. This presentation highlights the solution of separating small de-central heat pumps from large central heat pumps. A de-central propylene system and a central propane heat pump are shown as examples. These systems can be made with direct expansion or indirect with water loops, as well as by adding thermal storage for moderate climates.

Kent Hofmann - Process cooling with CO2 in Mack brewery, Norway

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

In his presentation, Kent Hofmann introduced Green&Cool’s latest CO2 transcritical project in Norway. The Norwegian brewery Mack is moving toward a more modern plant by installing two CO2 transcritical chillers with a total cooling capacity of 500KW. According to Hofmann, the system satisfies Mack’s requirements for performance, safety and reduced environmental impact.

Mads Sigsgaard - Plate freezers aboard fishing vessels using CO2 and ammonia

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

According to Mads Sigsgaard from DSI, plate freezers aboard fishing vessels using CO2 and ammonia are becoming more and more attractive for new installations aboard European fishing vessels. Maximising production and refrigeration efficiency is key for ship-owners when investing in plate freezers. Therefore, most new European fishing vessels employ NH3 and CO2 plate freezers. In the past few years, DSI has delivered many plate freezers using natural refrigerants for European fishing companies.

Luc Jacquet - Thermal compression of CO2 to reduce boiler consumption by half

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

This case study presents how boostHEAT merged two heating technologies: the boiler and the heat pump. The fusion was performed using an original patented thermal compression system. The calorific value of the fuel is used not to power the heating system, but to compress the CO2 refrigerant used in the heat pump cycle. The anticipated reduction in consumption levels is 45-60% for low temperature boilers (35°C), 25-40% for high temperature boilers (55-65°C). The first prototype has been designed to provide a rated power of 10kW and run for 50,000 hours (15 years) without requiring maintenance. boostHEAT also analyses an innovative new business model to push the technology to market.

Robert Sossi - High pressure compressors in Industrial plants

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

Robert Sossi, Technical Manager at Mayekawa Germany, presented a field case of a freezing plant for bakery products using a NH3/CO2 refrigeration system. Sossi's presentation highlights the efficiency gains that can be achieved with high pressure compressors and points out that natural refrigerants are the main trend in industrial refrigeration.

Joachim Maul - Environment-friendly heating with R290 heat pumps

PDF document
published on 15 October 2013

Joachim Maul, Director of R&D at ait-deutschland, presents on LWD R290 heat pumps, which can reach flow temperatures of up to 70°C. Water temperatures of 62°C at -20°C are possible without an additional electrical heater. The heat pump is suitable for renovation markets. According to Maul, R290 is a good refrigerant for outdoor air/water heat pumps and provides advantages of high temperatures at low ambient temperatures.
