Marc-André Lesmerises, from Carnot Refrigeration, focused on the company's new Aquilon system, promoting its energy efficiency and environmental impact (100% use of CO2), and its development at Bell Canada. The program involved transforming the refrigeration system in the server rooms, using an Ottawa site for the first installation of Aquilon. Following on from the impressive results, Carnot expects more projects with Bell Canada to be signed off in the future.

John Prall, Commercial Technical Support Engineer for Embraco North America and Richard Bair, Systems Engineering Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific's Laboratory Products Cold Storage Business Unit, jointly detailed the first hydrocarbon variable speed ULT freezer for the medical and chemical industries, which utilises Embraco's ‘Fullmotion’ compressor, which intuitively meets peak and off-peak demand. Embraco caters its systems to reduce hydrocarbon charge limit.

Yoram Shabtay from Heat Transfer Technologies, Jian Yu from Super Radiator Coils, and Nigel Cotton from International Copper Association explored new copper tubing technology used for CO2 gas coolers and evaporators in applications varying in size from small refrigeration systems for vending machines to large industrial cooling systems. The presentation included the performance, industrial application, and practicality of the heat exchangers in a large-scale, North American setting, while also investigating new engineering regarding high-strength tube alloys.

Michael Duggan, from RLS, reviewed flame-free press fittings and their enhancements in regard to the adoption of natural refrigerants by eliminating the need for brazing, which is often a challenge and concern for manufacturing and repairs in the field. The presentation examined testing and examples of the products as well as plans for product adjacency with versions for additional metal systems.

Vincent Delecourt, from Cooltech Applications, examined magnetic cooling as a revolutionary technology and its use in industrialised devices, first integrated into refrigerated cabinets by Cooltech. To begin using magnetic cooling throughout the industry, the first applications were introduced to the commercial refrigeration market, equipping many partners' professional refrigerated cabinets with the new system. While the product launch has not yet been finalised, Cooltech Applications and its partners are continuing to optimise the cabinets, testing different heat exchanger types and architectures.

Nominees will be evaluated in food retail, foodservice and industrial sectors and awards will be presented at ATMOsphere America 2016.

Nina Masson, Deputy Managing Director of shecco gave a sneak peak of the 'GUIDE to Natural Refrigerants in North America - State of the Industry', an soon-to-be released report that evaluates the dynamic market developments related to natural refrigerant use and provides an outlook for future developments in North America. Masson pointed out that the report puts a specific focus on commercial, light commercial and industrial refrigeration sectors, where the introduction of natural refrigerant technologies has accelerated, particularly in the last few years as a result of changing regulatory environment as well as end user and industry commitments.

Gerald Wozniak of the EPA’s Stratospheric Protection Division, explained how, if left unchecked, the U.S.’s carbon emissions could rise to around 20% of global figures by 2050. As a manager of the EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy program, Wozniak highlighted the importance of reducing the use of HFCs domestically while transitioning to natural, sustainable alternatives.
